Adelaide Crows v Geelong Cats Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - Crows destined for scrapheap with Cats to secure a vital win

  • Adelaide take on Geelong in Thursday night footy. Here is our preview of the Round 17 clash.

Round 17 of the AFL home and away season gets underway on Thursday night, July 12, when the Adelaide Crows take on the Geelong Cats at the Adelaide Oval.

Little separates the two sides in the early head to head betting and the action gets underway at 7.50PM AEST or 7.20PM local time. Channel 7 and Fox Footy will broadcast the game.

Match Preview

Adelaide will be out to keep their slim finals hopes alive by registering a win against Geelong. After finishing runner-up in 2017, the Crows have endured a tough run with form and injuries and find themselves in 11th position on the ladder with seven wins. They come off a 47 point loss at the hands of their conquerors from last year, Richmond.

Geelong are much better placed and are in 7th position on the ladder with nine wins. However, they can ill afford a loss as competition for spots in the eight is tight. They could well see themselves out of the eight at the conclusion of the round if they go down.

Chris Scott's side come off a 12 point win over Sydney last weekend, which should have been more, given that they registered 31 scoring shot to 14. They conceded just nine goals to the Swans throughout the night and are the competition's best defensive side in 2018.

Adelaide may struggle to kick a winning score. After dominating in attack last year by scoring more than any side, they are ranked just 12th for total points this season.

A lot of the Crows fortunes will hinge on the ability of likes of Taylor Walker and Josh Jenkins to convert in front of goal. Walker was brilliant in the Crows most recent home game, which was a win over West Coast.

Geelong will be looking for their second tier players to continue to stand up. Tim Kelly and Mitch Duncan have been brilliant in recent weeks, while the former Crow, Patrick Dangerfield, should also find plenty of the footy against his former side.

Match Odds

Adelaide Crows $1.92
Geelong Cats $1.92

Team News

Adelaide have a lengthy injury list with Mitch McGovern and Brodie Smith among those already ruled out of Thursday nights game. Eddie Betts is some chance of returning from a hamstring injury.

Geelong may regain Daniel Menzel and Lachie Henderson but it is hard to pick just which players will make way for that duo.

Stats

The two sides last met in the 2017 Preliminary Final and on that occasion it was Adelaide that were far too good, prevailing by 61 points. Rory Laird and Josh Jenkins were among the better players for the Crows in that game.

Adelaide have won two out of three against Geelong at the Adelaide Oval. They are five from seven at the venue against interstate opposition this year. Geelong travelled to the Adelaide Oval earlier this season and defeated Port Adelaide.

Prediction and Tips

Geelong will be too good in this and represent value in the head to head betting.
