AFL Premiership Odds 2017 - GWS installed as a $4.50 to take out the 2017 flag

  • GWS favoured to claim their first ever premiership next year
  • Can the Western Bulldgos go back-to-back?
  • Essendon into $34 as suspended players resume training

As the majority of the AFL's sides return to pre-season training, it is Greater Western Sydney that remain favourites to take out the 2017 premiership with CrownBet.

The Giants have been installed as a $4 chance to take out their first silverware ahead of the 2016 premiers, the Western Bulldogs, who are at the second line of betting.

The Giants went down in agonising fashion to the eventual premiers in the Preliminary Final but are expected to only improve, given the likely progression of their dearth of younger players such as Stephen Coniglio, Toby Greene and Dylan Shiel

After securing their first premiership in 62 years, Luke Beveridge's Bulldogs have been installed at $6 with CrownBet, while the side that they knocked over in the Grand Final, Sydney, are rated a $7 chance.

The Swans, who finished as minor premiers in 2016, have finished in the top four for each of the past five years and are sure to be up there again, as are Geelong, who are rated an $11 chance of securing premiership success next season.

After an exciting, but ultimately unsuccessful year, Adelaide are well in the market at $13, while a new look Hawthorn are also at that quote, as are the West Coast Eagles. The top seven sides in the market finished in those positions at the end of 2016.

One side that is expected to improve in 2017 after a horror campaign is Fremantle. The Dockers were the big winners in the trade period, picking up the exciting Cam McCarthy, as well as premiership players in Bradley Hill and Joel Hamling.

Ross Lyon's side finished minor premiers in 2015 before it all fell away but they regain Nathan Fyfe from injury, who will be well complemented by the new arrivals, and can scoot up the ladder. The Dockers are a $23 shot for premiership glory, just ahead of St Kilda and Melbourne (both $26).

For the growingly impatient army of Collingwood fans, Nathan Buckley's side have been posted at $29, while the Magpies arch-rivals, Essendon, are $34. The Bombers will finally be looking to put the drugs controversy behind them and regain some key senior players including Dyson Heppell and Michael Hurley, as well as Jobe Watson.

Port Adelaide ($41), Richmond ($51) and the Gold Coast Suns ($67) are all very rough chances, as are this years finalists, North Melbourne ($67), despite securing some promising pick-ups at the trade table.

Rounding out the market are Carlton at $151, while the Brisbane Lions are at the whopping odds of $501 to claim the flag next season.
