Round 9 of the AFL home and away season gets underway on Friday May 18 when the Adelaide Crows play host to the Western Bulldogs at the Adelaide Oval.

The Crows sit in 4th position on the ladder after eight rounds, while the Bulldogs are 13th but in what is a very even season there is only one win separating the two clubs with Adelaide winning five of eight, compare to the Dogs, who have split their eight matches to date.

The 2016 premiers come off a 14 point win over Brisbane at Etihad Stadium last weekend, while the Crows went down in the dying stages to their local rivals, Port Adelaide, by five points.

On Saturday, there are five games in store and one of the highlights will be when the Gold Coast Suns take on Port Adelaide. The fixture will be held at Shanghai in China, just the second for premiership points in the populous East Asian nation and it is the Power that head in as strong favourites.

Ken Hinkley's side should head in full of confidence after their last minute heroics over Adelaide in Round 7 and were comprehensive winners in the corresponding match against the Suns in 2017. First bounce is at 3.15PM AEST.

An interesting encounter will be played out in Hobart, where North Melbourne take on the GWS Giants at Blundstone Arena. The betting is very even in this one and few would have thought this would be the case at the start of the year when the Giants were the flag favourites, while North were fancied for the wooden spoon.

In Melbourne, the struggling Essendon Bombers take on the Geelong Cats at the MCG in twilight footy, while across town at the MCG it is Collingwood that face St Kilda at 7.25PM

At the same time in Sydney, the Sydney Swans will be going for back to back wins after getting up in one of the games of the season against Hawthorn last weekend. They take on Fremantle at the SCG.

On Sunday there are three games to close out the round and the first of those will be when Carlton take on Melbourne at the MCG. The Blues broke through for their first win of 2018 last weekend but the Demons are expected to get the points here.

The 3.20PM game sees Brisbane take on Hawthorn and this will be the first time that the Hawks three time premiership winning skipper, Luke Hodge, takes on his former side. The 'General', who now wears the Lions colours squares off against his former teammates in what should be an interesting encounter.

The action closes out with what shapes as a massive clash between the West Coast Eagles and Richmond at Perth Stadium. The two sides are the early pacesetters in 2018 and sit 1-2 on the ladder. Little separates them in the head to head betting.
