Essendon Bombers vs Geelong Cats Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - The desperate Bombers face the Cats

Jackson Oldham 15 May 2018
  • Preview and predictions for the Round 9 clash between the Bombers and the Cats

The Essendon Bombers are in turmoil and will be looking to bounce back when they face the Geelong Cats on Saturday Afternoon at the MCG.

All action can be seen live on Fox Footy from 4:30pm, with the first bounce at 4:35pm (AEST).

Match Preview

The Essendon Bombers are in Crisis mode after their horror 13-point loss to the winless Carlton last Saturday. It was the doomsday scenario for the Bombers, a team who has now lost six of their last seven matches after a comeback victory against the Adelaide Crows in Round 1.

Such was the magnitude of the Bombers loss, it took only 48 hours before swift action was taken. Game Performance Coach Mark Neeld was sacked as the Bombers admitted they needed change.

The Bombers are averaging only 67 points in their last four matches, which include a 49-point loss to the Magpies on Anzac Day, a 36-point loss to the Demons and a 23-point loss to the Hawks.

In a 2018 AFL season that has given us primarily low-scoring, the Bombers defence has been almost as dismal as its offence. Essendon is averaging 96.4 points against and have allowed the Dockers, Bulldogs, Magpies and Demons to all kick 100 points against them.

The Geelong Cats are sitting quietly in third on the AFL Ladder, with a 5-3 record after Round 8. Following a poor loss at home against an undermanned Sydney Swans side in Round 6, the Cats have thumped the GWS Giants and fought out a tough victory against a scrappy Collingwood.

In what a ‘dour’ affair, the Cats wore down the injured Magpies after only five goals were kicked between the two teams in the first half. Gary Ablett finished with a team-high 32 disposals while Sam Menegola kicked three goals. Menegola proved key in the third-quarter, kicking consecutive goals to break the game open.

Incredibly, the Cats have limited their opponents to only 53 points over the last month of Footy. This doesn’t bode well for the Bombers, who have had their scoring woes.

Match Odds

Essendon $4.50
Geelong $1.22

Team News

Essendon key-forward Joe Daniher will miss at least another 2-3 weeks with osteitis pubis. There are no injuries to report for Essendon from their loss against Carlton, however, “spots are in jeopardy” according to Coach John Worsfold.

Key-forward Tom Hawkins will return against the Bombers after serving his one-match ban for making contact with an umpire. Geelong captain Joel Selwood suffered a corkie in the third quarter against the Pies but did return and finished the game. He should be fine to play this week against the Bombers.

Stats

Geelong has won four of their last five matches against Essendon. The Bombers did win their most recent encounter against the Cats in Round 8, 2017 but haven’t won consecutive matches against the Cats since 2002.

Prediction and Tips

I’m expecting the Cats to win comfortably, however, I don’t believe there is any value at the 30.5 point line. Looking to the Total Points Market, I’m confident we should see a low-scoring affair. The Bombers have had real trouble kicking goals while the Cats have kept the Pies to 45 points and the Giants to 32 points in the last two weeks. It will be a cold and windy Saturday Afternoon at the MCG with a chance of rain. I’m happy with the Under.
