Gold Coast Suns v Essendon Bombers Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - The Bombers face a must-win contest

Jackson Oldham 11 Jul 2018
  • The Suns face the Bombers in this Round 17 clash

The Gold Coast Suns have slipped to 17th on the AFL ladder and will be desperate for a victory when they face the Essendon Bombers at Metricon Stadium on Saturday, July 14.

The match gets underway at 7:25pm AEST, all the action can be seen live on Fox Sports 3 from 7:00pm.

Match Preview

Despite winning five of their last seven matches, Essendon finds themselves two games outside the top eight with a poor percentage. The Bombers sit in 12th and have two must-win matches against the Gold Coast Suns and Fremantle Dockers in the next fortnight to keep their 2018 season alive.

The Bombers have struggled to put teams to the sword this season. A 35-point victory against the GWS Giants was their biggest margin of victory for the season. In saying that, It has been a good month for the Bombers who followed up a victory against the Lions with an impressive 28-point against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium.

The Bombers fought gallantly against Collingwood on Sunday at the MCG, but the Pies had too much class late, kicking four of the last five goals to win by 16-points. The Bombers day went from bad to worse with the news that key forward Jake Stringer would miss a month of football with a calf injury.

The Gold Coast Suns have had a season to forget. The Suns have slipped to 17th on the AFL ladder with 10 consecutive losses. The Suns have lost these ten games by an average of 49 points, with three of those losses coming here at Metricon Stadium.

The Suns will be hopeful to get reinforcements back this week, with Steven May and Pearce Hanley listed as tests on the injury list. It’s been a horror three months for the Suns, who have allowed an average of 104.5 points in their last 12 matches.

Match Odds

Gold Coast - $4.60
Essendon - $1.21

Team News

Plenty of Suns players nearing a return, whether that is in the AFL or the NEAFL. Steven May (Hip), Pearce Hanley (Shoulder), Brayden Fiorini (Leg), and Matt Rosa (Hamstring) are all listed as Tests. After three months, Hanley is likely to resume in the NEAFL as he continues to recover from his dislocated shoulder.

The Bombers are suffering injury concerns of their own. Key forward Jake Stringer will be out for 3-4 weeks with a calf injury he suffered against the Pies on Sunday. Orazio Fantasia missed the game against the Pies with a Groin injury and is listed as a Test for Saturday’s match.

Stats

  • The Gold Coast Suns have lost their last six matches at Metricon Stadium. Their last victory at home was Round 15, 2017 against North Melbourne.
  • The Bombers have won their last two clashes against the Suns.
  • The Bombers are averaging 87.75 points per game in the last month of football. That is up from 75 points the previous month.

Tips and Predictions

This is a must-win game for the Bombers, however, they have really struggled to put sides away this season and the Suns have a knack of having around against the Bombers. I’m happy to take the Suns at the line.
