GWS Giants v Richmond Tigers Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - Can the Giants stay in touch by knocking over the premiers?

Adam Cusworth 10 Jul 2018
  • The Giants need to claim victory in their bid to play finals but it will be tough against the Tigers. Here is our preview of the Saturday night clash.

One of the key games of AFL Round 17 will be when the GWS Giants take on Richmond at Spotless Stadium on Saturday July 7.

The important clash gets underway at 7.25PM and all the action can be seen on Channel 7 and Fox Footy.

Match Preview

After losing their Round 16 game to West Coast by 11 points, GWS dropped out of the top eight and are now in 10th spot, half a win behind the sides that occupy 6th through to 9th.

The Giants will need an against the odds victory if they are to stay in contention. Their opposition, Richmond, are sitting pretty on top of the ladder and can edge closer to a home final with a victory over the Giants. They are $1.53 favourites in the early head to head betting.

The premiers have won their past three games and those have come against some classy opposition in Geelong, Sydney and Adelaide. Last week's win saw them defeat the Crows by 47 points and it was Dustin Martin and Shane Edwards that were among the better players.

The Tigers held Adelaide to just eight goals and they continue to suffocate their opposition's attacking options, ranking second in the competition for fewest points scored. Without Jeremy Cameron and Jonathan Patton, GWS will find it hard to kick a winning score.

One area that the Giants can get on top in is winning the contested possessions and clearances. They rank higher than Richmond in these areas. Callan Ward, Stephen Coniglio and Dylan Shiel are among a number of Giants that can provide some ascendancy in the middle.

Match Odds

GWS Giants $2.50
Richmond $1.53

Team News

Toby Greene and Brett Deledio are edging closer towards a return for the Giants, while Matt Buntine, Adam Kennedy and Tim Mohr are others that will be considered.

Richmond could lose as many as three premiership players with Jack Graham, Nathan Broad and Dan Butler all expected to miss after sustaining injuries last weekend. Daniel Rioli is another that is in doubt. However, Nick Vlaustin and Bachar Houli are possible inclusions.

Stats

Richmond have won seven of the nine games between the two sides, including the 2017 Preliminary Final at the MCG by 36 points. The Tigers also enjoyed a victory over GWS in Round 18 last year at the MCG but went down in agonising fashion by three points to the Giants at Spotless Stadium earlier in the year.

GWS have won five of their seven home games in 2018, while Richmond have lost all three of their interstate encounters this season and will need to overcome that mini hoodoo.

Prediction and Tips

Richmond will be too good.
