  • Hawthorn need to secure a win against Brisbane in AFL Round 17. Here is our preview of the UTAS Stadium clash.

Hawthorn take on the Brisbane Lions on Saturday July 7 and the Round 17 encounter gets underway at 1.45PM.

The UTAS Stadium is a crucial one for the Hawks and the action can be seen on Fox Footy.

Match Preview

Hawthorn find themselves in the top eight after their dominant win over the Western Bulldogs last weekend and will be keen to back that performance up with a victory over Brisbane.

The 8th placed Hawks are among four sides between 6th and 9th on the ladder with nine wins for the year and need to pick up the four points in order to maintain their position.

Brisbane are 16th on the ladder with just three wins for the season. However, two of those have been in the last two weeks so they enter this encounter with some fine form. Their other win for the season came against Hawthorn earlier in the year.

Chris Fagan's side defeated Fremantle by 55 points in Round 15 before knocking over lowly Carlton by 65 in Round 16. Despite this, they have been installed as the $4.10 underdogs for Saturday's game.

Fagan will need to find the formula that has worked in recent weeks as well as the plan he used to conquer the Hawks in Round 9. On that occasion, Brisbane booted 20 goals for the game but since then, Hawthorn have conceded an average of just 60 points per game.

Look for James Sicily to patrol the backline for the Hawks, while at the other end it will be interesting to see if Jarryd Roughead, Jack Gunston and Luke Breust can maintain their fine form. That trio combined for 14 goals in the 63 point win over the Bulldogs last weekend.

Key players for Brisbane include Eric Hipwood, who booted six goals against Carlton last weekend, as well as Dayne Beams and Dayne Zorko. Beams and Zorko take on the likes of Tom Mitchell and Jaegar O'Meara in the middle of the ground.

Match Odds

Hawthorn $1.24
Brisbane $4.10

Team News

Hawthorn lose Ben McEvoy to a cheekbone injury. It remains to be seen if the VFL ruckman, Marc Pittonet, will replace him. Tim O'Brien is another candidate to come in. Jon Ceglar will take the bulk of the ruck duties if the Hawks decide to go with a smaller player instead.

Brisbane are unlikely to make too many changes to the side that thumped Carlton last weekend.

Stats

Brisbane defeated Hawthorn earlier this year by 56 points at the GABBA. Dayne Zorko and Dayne Beams were the stars for the Lions, while Tom Mitchell picked up 46 touches for the Hawks.

Hawthorn won the eight games prior to that between the two sides. Six of those were held at UTAS Stadium. The Hawks have lost just once in their past 26 visits to the venue.

Prediction and Tips

Brisbane have been in good form of late but so have Hawthorn. Expect the Hawks to get the job done at their home away from home of UTAS Stadium.
