Melbourne Demons v Western Bulldogs Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - Plenty at stake for the Dees

  • The Demons and the Dogs square off at the MCG in AFL Round 17. Can the Dees pick up a vital win in race for finals spots?

The Melbourne Demons and the Western Bulldogs feature in one of four AFL games on Saturday July 7 and the Round 17 encounter presents the Demons with a great chance on consolidating their spot in the eight.

Fox Footy will broadcast the action live from the MCG. First bounce is at 4.35PM AEST.

Match Preview

Melbourne are edging closer and closer towards their first finals birth since 2006 and sit in 6th position on the ladder with nine wins to their credit. The Demons come off a 54 point win over Fremantle, a win that snapped a three game losing streak.

The Western Bulldogs are out of contention and have won just five games this season. Last weekend, they went down to Hawthorn by 63 points and that loss was their fifth in six weeks.

Melbourne lead the Bulldogs in a number of statistical measures. They rank No.1 in the competition for points scored, contested possessions and hitouts while they are in the top three for contested marks and clearances.

Max Gawn is likely to dominate at the stoppages, giving the likes of Clayton Oliver and Jack Viney first use of the footy. That trio were dominant in the win over Freo last weekend.

One area that the Dees will want to improve in is their kicking or goal. They registered 24 points last weekend with Jesse Hogan and Christian Petracca combining for 2.6.

The Bulldogs can shine at winning the uncontested possession count. They shared the ball around patiently against Hawthorn last weekend and led the Hawks at half time before falling away. Key players include Jason Johannisen, Marcus Bontempelli and Lachie Hunter.

Match Odds

Melbourne $1.20
Western Bulldogs $4.50

Team News

Melbourne may lose Joel Smith to a hip issue. Dom Tyson and Aaron vandenBurg are among those that could come in. The Western Bulldogs have more injury concerns. Aaron Naughton is set to miss but Lachie Hunter should be ok despite hurting his knee in the loss to the Hawks.

Stats

The two sides met earlier this season and it was Melbourne by 49 points with that game played at Etihad Stadium. Melbourne also won at that venue against the Dogs in 2017 but the last match the two sides played at the MCG was in Round 16 of 2008.

On that occasion it was the Bulldogs by 32 points. The Dogs haven't played at the home of footy this season. They have won their past six games at the 'G', including their famous win in the 2016 Grand Final.

Prediction and Tips

Melbourne have displayed a tendency to dominate sides that are in the lower rungs of the ladder and this looks to be cherry ripe for them. If they can kick straight, a win by over five goals looks to be well and truly within their grasp.
