North Melbourne and the Sydney Swans meet at Etihad Stadium in AFL Round 17 and the Sunday 3.20PM clash shapes as an important one for both sides finals hopes.

Both are among a logjam of sides that are fighting for spots in the eight and little separates them in the early head to head betting. Channel 7 and Fox Sports will broadcast all the action.

Match Preview

This is a must win game for both sides, particularly North, who sit in 9th position on the ladder, four spots behind the 5th placed Sydney outfit that have an extra win to their credit over the course of the season.

The Kangaroos have exceeded pre-season expectations and are level on wins with 6th placed Melbourne but their improvement will count for little if they go down in this one. Brad Scott's side have won five of their past seven and come off a 37 point win in a largely uninspiring game over the Gold Coast Suns last weekend.

Like the Roos, Sydney will be in a bit of trouble if they go down and may find themselves out of the eight at the conclusion of the round if they are conquered. The Swans lost their Round 16 clash to Geelong by 11 points and that followed a loss to Richmond in Round 15.

There will be a number of key battles around the ground. Lance Franklin, Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker head in with good form for Sydney. Kennedy and Parker will go head to head with the likes of Ben Cunnington and Shaun Higgins in the middle of the ground, while Scott Thompson is likely to score the job on Franklin.

'Buddy' has booted 39 goals for the season and is 2nd on the goalkicking table, seven off the tearaway leader- North Melbourne's Ben Brown, who has 46 goals to his credit.

Match Odds

North Melbourne $1.98
Sydney Swans $1.83

Team News

North Melbourne have no immediate injury concerns out of the win over the Gold Coast. Ben McKay and Sam Durdin are possible inclusions but it is hard to see them tinkering with their lineup too much..

Sydney will lose Jarrad McVeigh to a collarbone injury as well as Dan Hannebery to a calf. Isaac Heeney and Tom Papley are set to replace that duo.

Stats

North Melbourne defeated Sydney in thrilling circumstances at the SCG earlier this year, taking out the Round 7 clash by two points. Mason Wood and Shaun Higgins were among the better players for North that night, while Josh Kennedy and Callum Sinclair were Sydney's key contributors.

Sydney won five of their past six against the Kangaroos prior to that, including the Round 8 encounter at Etihad Stadium in 2017 by 42 points. The Swans have a great record at the venue, winning 10 of their past 12.

Prediction and Tips

This one shapes as a real flip of the coin job but Sydney's slight edge in class, as well as their good record at Etihad, may be enough to see them through.
