St Kilda Saints v Carlton Blues Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - Saints should be too good for the Blues

  • The Saints and Blues clash in Friday Night Football

St Kilda gets the perfect opportunity to make it three wins in four weeks when they face the Carlton Blues in Friday Night Football on Friday, July 13 at Etihad Stadium.

The Saints and Blues clash in what isn’t likely to be spectacular viewing. All the action can be seen live on Channel 7 and Fox Footy from 7:30pm, with the match getting underway at 7:50pm.

Match Preview

It’s no secret that Alan Richardson and the Saints have had an underwhelming 2018. Finals expectations were placed firmly upon them at the start of the season. Three wins after 16 rounds is not what the Saints were after, however, there have been positive signs in the last month of football.

The Saints came from 30 points down in the final quarter to defeat the Suns at Metricon Stadium, before scoring a gutsy 119-117 victory over ‘premiership contenders’ Melbourne at the MCG. The question Where was this all year? Was quite rightly asked to Alan Richardson and his men, however, the fact they are trending the right direction is clearly a positive for Saints fans.

The Saints did more right than wrong against Port Adelaide, but still finished 36-point losers as Charlie Dixon and the Power took over the game late. Although lacking a real superstar, I believe the Saints can be a legitimate top eight side if they build their identity around pressure and outside ball use.

What can I say that hasn’t already been said about the Carlton football club? I don’t like to overreact on one game of football, but the Blues looked utterly disinterested against a Brisbane Lions team who was 17th on the ladder and hadn’t won consecutive matches since early 2015.

It was nothing more than a training drill for the Lions, who kicked 15 goals to five after quarter-time. Young Lions forward Eric Hipwood kicked a career-high six goals as Dayne Beams racked up the easiest 40 possessions you are ever likely to see.

The Blues are averaging only 62.8 points per game, which is last in the competition. If they are going to remain within 40 points of the Saints, they need to make this a low-scoring, scrappy contest. With a top of 13 degrees and wins between 25 to 35 km/h, a low-scoring game is highly likely.

Team News

Things have gone from bad to worse for the Blues. Youngster Andrew Phillips (hamstring) was injured early in the first quarter against the Lions and Jacob Weitering (calf) was not seen for most of the last quarter. Caleb Marchbank went to hospital for an elevated heartbeat while Kade Simpson (calf) was a late withdrawal against the Lions.

Stats

  • The Saints have won their last three matches against the Blues, with an average winning margin of 41 points.
  • The Blues have allowed opposition teams to score 100 points or more in eight of their 15 matches this season.
  • Carlton has finished with four wooden spoons this century and is in the box seat to make it five at the end of 2018.
