St Kilda Saints vs Collingwood Magpies Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - The Magpies should beat the struggling Saints

Jackson Oldham 15 May 2018
  • Preview and predictions for the Round 9 clash between the Saints and the Magpies

The St Kilda Saints nightmare season continues. They will look to turn things around when they host the Collingwood Magpies in Round 9 at Etihad Stadium on Saturday Night.

The match will get underway at 7:25pm. All the action can be seen live on 7Mate from 7:00pm and on Fox Footy from 7:25pm (AEST).

Match Preview

The St Kilda football club came into 2018 with lofty expectations. A young core group led by an experienced head coach Alan Richardson had laid the foundations for finals football at the very least.

The first Eight rounds have been nothing short of a disaster for the Saints. They started 1-0 with a victory against the Brisbane Lions and have yet to register more than 73 points in a match since then.

The Saints could only manage a putrid one goal in the first half against Fremantle at Optus Stadium on Saturday Night as the Dockers held a 36-point lead at the main break. The Saints kicked 6.2 in the third-quarter and bridged the margin to within three straight kicks, but it wasn’t enough as the Dockers finished 30-point winners.

Collingwood sit 11th on the AFL ladder after eight rounds, but with a 4-4 record, Nathan Buckley and his players should be happy with the progress they have made this season. The Pies have had a tough eight-week stretch, only losing to the Hawks, Giants, Tigers and Cats.

The Pies will lament their poor goal kicking in a 21-point loss to the Cats on Sunday Afternoon. The Pies kicked 5.15 and could only manage one goal in the first half.

The Pies have gotten through the tough part of their schedule and will now play the Saints, Bulldogs, Demons, Blues, Suns and Bombers over the next six weeks, with five of those six matches here in Melbourne.

Match Odds

St Kilda $3.40
Collingwood $1.32

Team News

Collingwood will get a much-needed boost with captain Scott Pendlebury returning from an Ankle injury he suffered against the Brisbane Lions two weeks ago. Brayden Maynard also looks likely to return from an Ankle injury against the Saints.

St Kilda forward Paddy McCartin is at least another week away from returning (concussion) while Sam Gilbert is no better than a 50/50 chance to take on Collingwood after suffering an Ankle injury on the weekend.

Stats

The Saints are ranked 18th for points scored per game. They have only averaged 64 points per game, partly due to their horrendous goal kicking. The Saints kicked 8.11 against the Fremantle Dockers, which takes them to 53.89 in their last seven matches.

The Saints have averaged only 55.6 points per game in their six losses this season.

The Saints have won their last two matches against the Pies however prior to that, Collingwood had won seven in a row against the Saints, dating back to the drawn Grand Final in 2010.

Prediction and Tips

Collingwood should be too good for the Saints. With a low-scoring game predicted, taking the Pies 1-39 looks a suitable bet.
