West Coast Eagles v Richmond Tigers Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - Two heavyweights battle in the West

Jackson Oldham 15 May 2018
  • Preview and predictions for the Round 9 clash between the Eagles and the Tigers

The West Coast Eagles face their biggest test for the season, hosting the top of the table Richmond Tigers at Optus Stadium on Sunday Afternoon at 4:40pm.

All the action can be seen live on Fox Footy from 4:30pm.

Match Preview

What a match to finish Round 9. The West Coast Eagles are proving themselves to be genuine contenders in 2018 while Richmond is showing no signs of a premiership hangover.

Despite not playing at their best, Richmond is showing they are the most formidable force in the AFL. With a 7-1 record, the Tigers are matched by only one team, the West Coast Eagles.

After dropping their Round 1 match against the Sydney Swans at Optus Stadium, the Eagles have won seven straight, including three road wins at the MCG, Etihad Stadium and Spotless Stadium.

The Eagles are coming off a terrific 25-point victory over the GWS Giants at Spotless Stadium. The Eagles won all four quarters of the contest on the back of four goals from in-form forward Jack Darling and 32 possessions from Andrew Gaff.

Richmond certainly didn’t play their best footy against North Melbourne in Round 8. A five-goal second-term looked ominous, however, the Tigers faltered, kicking only four goals for the second-half but managed to hang on by 10 points.

Skipper Trent Cotchin was superb, finishing with 37 touches and seven clearances, while Josh Caddy and Kane Lambert combined for seven goals.

The Tigers have been devastating on the offensive and defensive ends of the ground in 2018. The Tigers are averaging 105.7 points in their seven victories this season while holding their opponents to only 61.7 points.

Match Odds

West Coast $2.00
Richmond $1.80

Team News

A few Tigers will need to pass fitness tests before Sunday’s match against the Eagles. Nathan Broad (Corked glute) and Jason Castagna (Knee) both came off worse for wear after the Tigers victory against North Melbourne. Shaun Grigg (Hamstring) is likely to return.

The West Coast Eagles should be welcoming at least two players back into the line-up for their all-important clash against the Tigers. Lewis Jetta (Calf), Jeremy McGovern (Calf) and Dom Sheed (Foot) all trained on Tuesday and are likely inclusions.

Stats

The Tigers are the best first-quarter side in the competition while the Eagles are the best second-quarter side. The Tigers average and 26.1 total points in the first quarter and are +129 points against their opponents in first-quarters this season.

The Eagles are averaging 29.5 points in their second quarters and are +129 points against their opponents in second-quarters

Prediction and Tips

What a great game this promises to be. It should be tight and action-packed. I’m leaning towards the Eagles at home. As far as a bet goes, the Eagles have dominated second-quarters so far in 2018 and I’m backing them to win another here.
