MLB Tips

St Louis Cardinals @ Chicago Cubs

The late game on Sunday night (North American time) will feature the Chicago Cubs against the St. Louis Cardinals. The two teams are close in the standings with Chicago a game out of the NL Central lead and the Cardinals 4.5 games out. The division promises to feature a lot of important games down the stretch as the competition is close between four teams that all have mediocre records.

Sunday night's pitching match-up between the Cubs and Cards is an interesting one, featuring a strong pitcher for St. Louis against a pitcher that Chicago recently traded for. The Cards will have Michael Wacha on the mound, a pitcher that is 7-3 with a 3.71 ERA. Quintana enters the game just 5-8 on the season and with a 4.20 ERA.

The Cubs have been good of late, but Wacha has an impressive game log recently for the Cards. So far in July he has an ERA of 0.87 and he has tallied three wins in 20.2 innings pitched. That makes him a possible candidate for the NL's pitcher of the month for July. Quintana himself was uncharacteristically good in his only outing as a Cub. Could be that getting traded motivated this player or woke him up. In a game that's tricky for a straight-up pick, take the UNDER for total runs.

There were two injuries to important players in Major League Baseball this last week. In Houston, the Astros lost their shortstop until mid-September. However, Houston has such a huge lead in their division that it's hard to picture them losing their lead even with a key player missing.

In other injury news, the market for the NL's Cy Young Award looks like it is on hiatus with most sportsbooks. That's probably not due to the stage of the season we're at as teams still have about 60 games left. Rather, the market might be volatile right now as Clayton Kershaw left a game on Sunday with an injury. His lower back felt tense and no timetable has been provided yet. Could be that the sportsbooks feel a bit guarded right now due to the favorite's questionable status.

Sticking to the individual awards, it might be the last chance to get something on Aaron Judge to win the AL MVP. He leads the league with homeruns at 32 and at OPS with 1.083. We'll mention William Hill's odds on Judge to win the MVP. That firm has him short at $1.44. In contrast, Sportsbet still offer $2.00 on the Yankee to win the MVP.

Betting value can still be found by looking at the standings and the odds. From that point of view, the Kansas City Royals have not shortened as quickly as they probably should have. They could still be found at $9.50 to win the AL Central with Sportsbet. That's pretty long odds for a team that is just 1.5 games back of the division lead entering Monday. In their last ten games, the Royals have gained two games on Cleveland and, once again, KC's poised to take over the division lead. If the Royals have a good week, then $9.50 will go out the window. On the other hand, there's no need to rush to grab Cleveland's odds. You can't do any better than $1.28 with Unibet on the Indians to win their division. There's not far for those odds to go in the week ahead.

In an interesting development, the best underdog team on long-term trends is the Pittsburgh Pirates. They have won 18 of their last 30 for a .600 winning percentage during that time frame. There have been better teams during that stretch, but the others all have short odds. It looks like the Pirates have figured something out so you'll definitely want to get them at long odds in the NL Central division. They are priced at $10.00 with Ladbrokes to win that market.
