NBA Tips - Friday November 17

Golden State Warriors vs Boston Celtics
There are only two NBA games on the docket today but what a blockbuster day it is. The 13-2 Boston Celtics take on the defending champions and 11-3 Golden State Warriors. According to Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, the Celtics are “The future of the East” but they might also be the present too. With Gordon Hayward going down in the first six minutes of the season with a season-ending injury, the Celtics season started 0-2 and it seemed their NBA Finals dream was over before it even started. Since then the Celtics have won 13 consecutive games despite injuries to both Kyrie Irving and Al Horford. They now host the Warriors at TD Garden and it will be a great test to see what they’re made of. Masked Kyrie was the talk of Twitter on Wednesday. Irving played with the mask to protect his facial fracture and despite looking uncomfortable in it, he put up a game-high 25 points and five assists leading the Celtics to another win. This is an important game for Kyrie Irving, who declared when he left LeBron James and Cleveland that he wanted his own spotlight, his own team. Well, he finally gets his very first opportunity to lead his team into a blockbuster showdown tonight against the Golden State Warriors and something tells me he might have a night to remember. The Golden State Warriors started the season slowly by their unbelievably high standards, starting 1-2 and looking sloppy and unfocused with the basketball. Since then the Warriors have won ten of their last eleven matches. The Warriors are averaging 113 points during this 11 game stretch and have an average winning margin of 17.5 points. Stephen Curry sat out their latest 110-100 victory over the Orlando Magic with a thigh injury. Curry will play against the Celtics today, however, he may not be at 100 percent. Tonight is a huge test to see if the Celtics are legit or not, I believe they are and have full faith in Irving, coach Brad Stevens and all the pieces they are putting around Irving. I’m going to take the Celtics plus the points and look forward to an entertaining two and a half hours of basketball.

Houston Rockets vs Phoenix Suns
Often with these high-total games, their is money to be made in first-half betting as the bookies tend not to adjust their lines correctly. This, unfortunately, is not one of those times with both the first quarter and first half markets looking correct. The Phoenix Suns play with the second-highest pace rating at home at 108 possessions per game. Their previous game against the Lakers was simply a horror show. 31 turnovers and bad shot selection meant low-scoring. It’s an interesting trend this season, with those games against two poor teams that trended over last season is trending under this season. That is not the case with Houston Rockets games. The Rockets play at such a pace and with such a style it makes other teams need to score more. Wednesday was a perfect example of this as the Toronto Raptors scored 129 points against the Rockets as the game total pushed 242 points. The Rockets have struggled to get their three-point shooting going over the last two games, with shooting guard Eric Gordon leading that struggle. Gordon is just 3-of-18 from 3-point range in the last two games. My slight concern is that Chris Paul returns to the lineup tonight against the Suns. It may seem strange that adding a future Hall Of Fame point guard to the lineup is bad for scoring, but Paul likes to set things up and run plays. While in the long-term the Rockets will work this out, in the short term their offence looked to take a hit, consistently averaging fewer points when Paul was on the floor in the first portion of the season. We only need to look at the last meeting between the Rockets and Suns to know how free-flowing this game should be. Neither team shot over 47 percent from the field in their last matchup, however, the score was still 123-116 in favour of the Rockets. I’m having a small play on the over.

Betting on NBA Basketball

Bookmakers have a number of markets available for basketball games and we run through some of the most popular ways to bet on the sport.

Spread

The Point Spread, more commonly known as the ‘line’ in Australian betting terms, is one of the most common bet types. The spread allows the punter to get even odds on either team by giving or taking points. For example, if the Golden State Warriors are playing the Utah Jazz you may see this market...Golden State Warriors -11.5 vs Utah Jazz +11.5. The - symbol will always be associated with the favourite and the + symbol will always be associated with the underdog. This simply means if you take Golden State -11.5 they must win the game by 12 or more points for the bet to win. If you are betting on the Utah Jazz +11.5 this means the Jazz and either wins the game or lose by less than 12 points. If they do, the bet is a winner.

Total

Total betting is the most common bet for professional NBA bettors. The Total has two sides, the Over and the Under. The ‘Total’ is the number of combined points between the two teams. For example in the Golden State vs Utah game, the Total is set at 209.5. This means if the Warriors beat the Jazz 111-99, the total will have gone over the expected 209.5 points and the Over will be paid out. Vice Versa if the total score ends at 109-99 the Under will be paid out.

Money Line

The Money Line or ‘Head to Head’ betting is the simplest and most popular bet types in NBA. The Money line is simply the odds that bookmaker sets for either team to win a game. All the Money Line requires is for you to correctly pick the winner of the match. The Odds for an underdog will be much higher than betting against the spread so this is often a more popular betting proposition for the amateur punter.

First Basket Scorer

The First basket scorer market simple. You are able to bet on who will score the first basket of the game. Only the starting 10 players on the court are to be considered as bench players will never score the first basket of the game.

Quarter Betting

Betting on individual quarters is quickly becoming a more popular bet type among punters. You are able to bet on the outcome of a quarter, by betting on a team or the total points scored in that quarter. For example, if the Warriors are playing the Jazz, a first quarter market may read:

Golden State Warriors -1.5 | Over 55.5 points | Utah Jazz +1.5 | Under 55.5 points

It is important to watch for teams that are historically fast starters and others that are slow starters. The first quarter is regarded as the highest scoring quarter whilst the third quarter is known for being the lowest scoring.
