NBA Tips - Friday May 25

Cleveland Cavaliers @ Boston Celtics

This Eastern Conference Finals matchup between the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers has been one of momentum. Despite holding a 3-1 lead, the Cavaliers won’t feel anywhere near as comfortable as they did two games ago when they last left TD Garden in Boston.

After getting blown out by 44 points in Game Two, it looked like things couldn’t get any worse for the Boston Celtics. They were down 2-0 with two games in Cleveland. Then the news broke that their All-NBA point guard Isaiah Thomas would miss the remainder of the playoffs with a hip injury.

The Cavaliers held a 21-point lead in the third quarter of game three and a sweep looked inevitable. The Celtics somehow found a way to come back and on an Avery Bradley three pointer, managed to win the game on the last shot.

In Game Four all eyes were on the best player in the world, LeBron James. LeBron had one of his worst playoff performances ever, recording just 11 points while having more turnovers than field goals. We all expected LeBron to dominate game four with one of his vintage displays. That was not the case as James sat on the bench for the last seven minutes of the first half with four fouls. It was the first time in LeBron’s career that he has ever picked up four fouls in the first half.

With LeBron on the bench and the Boston Celtics up 11 points, we thought that somehow, against all odds the Boston Celtics could tie the series up at 2-2 and regain home court. Enter Kyrie Irving. Irving had a playoff high 42 points, shooting 15-22 from the field and 4-7 from beyond the arc.

To use a quote from the NBA show The Starters. “It’s Kyrie Irving’s flat world and we’re all just living in it.” Kyrie put on a show in the third quarter, scoring 21 points in that period alone. It was an incredible display of basketball that included 9-10 shooting from the field and 7-7 from two point range.

When all was said and done, LeBron James finished with 34 points, five rebounds and six assists. Despite those great numbers, people have since been asking questions about the health of LeBron. There have been rumours around that he was playing with an illness that carried over from Game Three, but those haven’t been confirmed or denied.

Rookie Jaylen Brown has been terrific off the bench in this series for the Celtics. Brown injured his hip pointer in game four and is questionable for this game. Losing him along with Isaiah Thomas would be a huge hole to fill for the Celtics.

As we look ahead to Game five back in Boston, it is hard to predict anything in the series. The Celtics starting five of Jae Crowder, Marcus Smart, Avery Bradley, Kelly Olynyk and Al Horford mixed it with the Cavaliers for a long time during game four, and we can only assume after two poor performances to start the series at TD Garden, the Celtics will be eager to give their home crowd something to cheer for here in game five.

"We're humble enough to know that we haven't played well at home, and we want to give our home crowd a better outing than we did the past two games," forward Jae Crowder told reporters. "We're right there where we want to be, we're locked in."

While I don’t think the Boston Celtics can win Game Five and extend the series, I do think they can push the Cleveland Cavaliers every step of the way and give them everything they can handle in front of their home crowd. I’m happy to take the Boston Celtics at the +10.5 line that seems extremely generous after looking at the two games in Quicken Loans Arena.

Betting on NBA Basketball

Bookmakers have a number of markets available for basketball games and we run through some of the most popular ways to bet on the sport.

Spread

The Point Spread, more commonly known as the ‘line’ in Australian betting terms, is one of the most common bet types. The spread allows the punter to get even odds on either team by giving or taking points. For example, if the Golden State Warriors are playing the Utah Jazz you may see this market...Golden State Warriors -11.5 vs Utah Jazz +11.5. The - symbol will always be associated with the favourite and the + symbol will always be associated with the underdog. This simply means if you take Golden State -11.5 they must win the game by 12 or more points for the bet to win. If you are betting on the Utah Jazz +11.5 this means the Jazz and either wins the game or lose by less than 12 points. If they do, the bet is a winner.

Total

Total betting is the most common bet for professional NBA bettors. The Total has two sides, the Over and the Under. The ‘Total’ is the number of combined points between the two teams. For example in the Golden State vs Utah game, the Total is set at 209.5. This means if the Warriors beat the Jazz 111-99, the total will have gone over the expected 209.5 points and the Over will be paid out. Vice Versa if the total score ends at 109-99 the Under will be paid out.

Money Line

The Money Line or ‘Head to Head’ betting is the simplest and most popular bet types in NBA. The Money line is simply the odds that bookmaker sets for either team to win a game. All the Money Line requires is for you to correctly pick the winner of the match. The Odds for an underdog will be much higher than betting against the spread so this is often a more popular betting proposition for the amateur punter.

First Basket Scorer

The First basket scorer market simple. You are able to bet on who will score the first basket of the game. Only the starting 10 players on the court are to be considered as bench players will never score the first basket of the game.

Quarter Betting

Betting on individual quarters is quickly becoming a more popular bet type among punters. You are able to bet on the outcome of a quarter, by betting on a team or the total points scored in that quarter. For example, if the Warriors are playing the Jazz, a first quarter market may read:

Golden State Warriors -1.5 | Over 55.5 points | Utah Jazz +1.5 | Under 55.5 points

It is important to watch for teams that are historically fast starters and others that are slow starters. The first quarter is regarded as the highest scoring quarter whilst the third quarter is known for being the lowest scoring.
