NBA Playoff Tips - Tuesday April 24

Houston Rockets @ Minnesota Timberwolves - Game 4

The Minnesota Timberwolves played their first home playoff game since 2004 in Game 3 against the Houston Rockets on Saturday.

The Timberwolves looked lacklustre in the first two games, but found tremendous energy underneath the raucous Minnesota crowd, defeating the Rockets 121-105.

Jimmy Butler is obviously not at 100 percent, but he still led the Timberwolves, shooting 10-19 from the field while making four threes as he scored a team-high 28 points. Karl-Anthony Towns had his best game of the series, scoring 18 points and 16 rebounds.

Much talk was made about Butler and Towns not being aggressive enough in the first two games of the series. Jimmy Butler spoke to the media postmatch, saying “I can tell you the last couple of days that I got tired of my teammates telling me to be more aggressive. "I took it upon myself to do just that. They are used to me being aggressive the past seven months, so don't switch it up now. I did that. I did my job."

Derrick Rose was a spark off the bench again for the Timberwolves. He shot 8-16 from the field, scoring 17 points. It’s still a concern for me that Rose has taken eight more shots than Karl-Anthony Towns in this series. The Wolves can’t expect a combined 40 points from Jeff Teague and Derrick Rose every night.

James Harden shot 2-18 from the field in Game 2, but bounced back as an MVP should, with a game-high 29 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Eric Gordon is struggling in this series, he is 6-26 from three-point range and has missed plenty of open looks. Gordon spoke to the Media after the Game 3 loss, saying "Offensively, we weren't pushing it at our pace. "We stooped to their level, playing slow. Of course, everyone will say that we missed a lot of open shots. Both teams are going to do that. It's all about creating the pace."

As we look ahead to a pivotal Game 4, It’s an important game for the Houston Rockets. When both teams flew to Minnesota after game two, most NBA experts were predicting a sweep. If the Rockets were to lose Game 4, it would ensure another trip to Minnesota for a Game 6.

The Houston Rockets need to increase their energy from Game 3 into Game 4 and take care of business in Minnesota, before winning the series in five games back in Houston. I’m confident they’ll do as much, and I will take the Rockets Line.

Oklahoma City Thunder @ Utah Jazz - Game 4

The Utah Jazz are looking to take a 3-1 series lead against the Oklahoma City Thunder in Salt Lake City on Tuesday Morning (AEST).

Utah Jazz rookie Donovan Mitchell has been simply incredible, leading the Jazz to steal home court advantage against Russell Westbrook, Paul George and Carmelo Anthony. The Jazz stole home court in Game 2, when they defeated the Thunder 102-95 in Oklahoma City.

The Thunder took a five-point lead into the final quarter of Game 2, before Russell Westbrook, Paul George and Carmelo Anthony shot a combined 0-14 from the field in the final 12 minutes. The Jazz outscored the Thunder 28-16 in the final term and pulled out the victory despite Donovan Mitchell shooting 0-7 from three-point range and Rudy Gobert making only three field goals.

The Thunder’s big three was touted as one of the best in the NBA at the start of the season, but they haven’t lived upto expectations. The Jazz’s big three of Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert and playoff Ricky Rubio are outplaying the Thunder through three games.

Playoff Ricky Rubio is a real thing. Rubio averaged 13.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 5.3 assists through 77 regular season games. In Game 1, Rubio had 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and 4 steals. In Game 2 he had 22 points, seven rebounds and nine assists. In Game 3, Rubio finished with 26 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

Ricky Rubio outplayed Russell Westbrook in Game 3. As expected, Westbrook was not pleased post-match, telling reporters “He made some shots, I’m gonna shut that (stuff) off next game. Guarantee that.

Donovan Mitchell is average 25.6 points for the series against the Thunder and doesn’t look like a Rookie on the big stage. Despite not getting to the free throw line in Game 3, Mitchell still finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds, helping his team to a 115-102 victory in Salt Lake City.

Utah Jazz coach Quin Snyder noted the energy brought by the fans in Salt Lake City. “The Atmosphere was tremendos,” Snyder said. “We’re grateful for our fans and that they were that engaged. It has an impact on our players. They’ve been like that all year, and I think tonight they hit a new high.”

The Jazz love playing in front of their home fans in Salt Lake City. They boasted a 29-13 record at home during the regular season.

As we look ahead to Game 4, It’s an important game in the series for both teams. I believe the Jazz will hold home court advantage and take a 3-1 lead going back into Oklahoma City. This Thunder team isn’t a team that has overcome adversity. When the pressure is on, they resort back to ‘Iso Ball’ with Westbrook, George and Anthony. This won’t cut it against an energised Jazz team.

Betting on NBA Basketball

Bookmakers have a number of markets available for basketball games and we run through some of the most popular ways to bet on the sport.

The Point Spread, more commonly known as the ‘line’ in Australian betting terms, is one of the most common bet types. The spread allows the punter to get even odds on either team by giving or taking points. For example, if the Golden State Warriors are playing the Utah Jazz you may see this market...Golden State Warriors -11.5 vs Utah Jazz +11.5. The - symbol will always be associated with the favourite and the + symbol will always be associated with the underdog. This simply means if you take Golden State -11.5 they must win the game by 12 or more points for the bet to win. If you are betting on the Utah Jazz +11.5 this means the Jazz and either wins the game or lose by less than 12 points. If they do, the bet is a winner.

Total betting is the most common bet for professional NBA bettors. The Total has two sides, the Over and the Under. The ‘Total’ is the number of combined points between the two teams. For example in the Golden State vs Utah game, the Total is set at 209.5. This means if the Warriors beat the Jazz 111-99, the total will have gone over the expected 209.5 points and the Over will be paid out. Vice Versa if the total score ends at 109-99 the Under will be paid out.

Money Line

The Money Line or ‘Head to Head’ betting is the simplest and most popular bet types in NBA. The Money line is simply the odds that bookmaker sets for either team to win a game. All the Money Line requires is for you to correctly pick the winner of the match. The Odds for an underdog will be much higher than betting against the spread so this is often a more popular betting proposition for the amateur punter.

First Basket Scorer
The First basket scorer market simple. You are able to bet on who will score the first basket of the game. Only the starting 10 players on the court are to be considered as bench players will never score the first basket of the game.

Quarter Betting
Betting on individual quarters is quickly becoming a more popular bet type among punters. You are able to bet on the outcome of a quarter, by betting on a team or the total points scored in that quarter. For example, if the Warriors are playing the Jazz, a first quarter market may read:

Golden State Warriors -1.5 | Over 55.5 points | Utah Jazz +1.5 | Under 55.5 points

It is important to watch for teams that are historically fast starters and others that are slow starters. The first quarter is regarded as the highest scoring quarter whilst the third quarter is known for being the lowest scoring.
