NBA Tips - Tuesday 25 April

Washington Wizards @ Atlanta Hawks

After going up 2-0 the Wizards went into Atlanta and were outhusled in game three against the Hawks. The Hawks jumped out of the gate and held a 38-20 advantage at quarter time. That 18 point advantage was held until the end of the game with the Hawks winning 116-98. It was a tight affair in the final 36 minutes of the game with the two teams tying 78-78 in the final three quarters. Paul Millsap and Dennis Schroder proved the difference for the Hawks. Millsap finished with a huge 29 points and 14 rebounds while Schroder finished with 27 points and nine assists. John Wall did all he could for the Wizards, shooting 10-12 from the field and finished with a game-high 29 points. Shooting guard Bradley Beal continued his shooting slump, managing just 6-20 from the field and 0-6 from beyond the arc. Make no mistake, these two teams hate each other. There is ongoing beef between Markieff Morris and Paul Millsap. Post Game the Wizards forward spoke about Paul Millsap. "Me, as a man, you take your wins with your losses. I take my wins with my losses all the time," Morris told reporters. "He just did more for his team. He's a crybaby. You get all the calls when you're a crybaby. That's how I look at it." As we look ahead to game four, I’m of the opinion that a false favourite has been installed. The Atlanta Hawks have come up a 2.5 point favourite over the Wizards. The Wizards are a better basketball team and my pick to make the Conference Finals. They won’t come out with a lack of intensity again and I’m backing my judgement of the Wizards in five. I was always of the belief that the Hawks would steal one game at home, and the Market looks to have overreacted to their 18-point win. Take the Wizards here.

Golden State Warriors @ Portland Trail Blazers

Get your brooms out because we’re preparing for a sweep. Despite suffering a leg fracture, Blazers big man Jusuf Nurkic was back in the lineup for game three. Nurkic played 16 minutes but was clearly in pain. That didn’t stop him from pulling down 11 boards and the Blazers look a much better team when he’s on the floor. Unfortunately for the Blazers he has been ruled out of game four and more than likely, the series. The Blazers looked energised in front of their home crowd and built up a 17-point lead as Lillard and McCollum combined for 63 points. It wasn’t enough however as the Warriors flicked the switch and turned it on, outscoring the Blazers 63-46 in the second half to win 119-113. Stephen Curry scored a game-high 34 points while Javale McGee and Andre Iguodala combined for 30 points off the bench. "They took it up another level," Portland coach Terry Stotts told reporters of Golden State. "They defended very well, created turnovers. Our offence kind of stagnated a little bit, they pushed it out in transition as well as they have so far in this series. I think they made three threes during the stretch. It’s what that do, they put a run on you." This series is looking more and more like the Cleveland vs Indiana series. With the Pacers holding a 26-point lead, LeBron James turned on the jets and found a way to win a cruel game three, crushing any chance the Pacers had for a comeback. The Warriors have now done the game against the Blazers and we should see the same result, a sweep. The Warriors were able to win game three by six points despite being down 17 and with Nurkic on the floor. Without Nurkic and the possibility of Durant returning to the lineup, the line of -7 looks like a good bet.

Betting on NBA Basketball

Bookmakers have a number of markets available for basketball games and we run through some of the most popular ways to bet on the sport.

The Point Spread, more commonly known as the ‘line’ in Australian betting terms, is one of the most common bet types. The spread allows the punter to get even odds on either team by giving or taking points. For example, if the Golden State Warriors are playing the Utah Jazz you may see this market...Golden State Warriors -11.5 vs Utah Jazz +11.5. The - symbol will always be associated with the favourite and the + symbol will always be associated with the underdog. This simply means if you take Golden State -11.5 they must win the game by 12 or more points for the bet to win. If you are betting on the Utah Jazz +11.5 this means the Jazz and either wins the game or lose by less than 12 points. If they do, the bet is a winner.

Total betting is the most common bet for professional NBA bettors. The Total has two sides, the Over and the Under. The ‘Total’ is the number of combined points between the two teams. For example in the Golden State vs Utah game, the Total is set at 209.5. This means if the Warriors beat the Jazz 111-99, the total will have gone over the expected 209.5 points and the Over will be paid out. Vice Versa if the total score ends at 109-99 the Under will be paid out.

Money Line

The Money Line or ‘Head to Head’ betting is the simplest and most popular bet types in NBA. The Money line is simply the odds that bookmaker sets for either team to win a game. All the Money Line requires is for you to correctly pick the winner of the match. The Odds for an underdog will be much higher than betting against the spread so this is often a more popular betting proposition for the amateur punter.

First Basket Scorer
The First basket scorer market simple. You are able to bet on who will score the first basket of the game. Only the starting 10 players on the court are to be considered as bench players will never score the first basket of the game.

Quarter Betting
Betting on individual quarters is quickly becoming a more popular bet type among punters. You are able to bet on the outcome of a quarter, by betting on a team or the total points scored in that quarter. For example, if the Warriors are playing the Jazz, a first quarter market may read:

Golden State Warriors -1.5 | Over 55.5 points | Utah Jazz +1.5 | Under 55.5 points

It is important to watch for teams that are historically fast starters and others that are slow starters. The first quarter is regarded as the highest scoring quarter whilst the third quarter is known for being the lowest scoring.
