Newcastle Tips - May 19

RACE 1 - 11:36am Class 2 HCP (900m)

I think LANGOUSTINE will enjoy this race a lot more than she did last start. That day, in a BM 70 city race, she drew 11 and was deep for most of the early stages before pushing on to be 2nd around home bend. Naturally weakened final stages but was beaten just 2 lengths. Is easier race here, has rails draw and carries less weight. Should turn it around.

RACE 2 - 12:16pm MAIDEN Plate (1400m)

This filly VERLAN was formerly trained at Goulburn but has been moved to Richard Freedman's stable. And her 2nd in a maiden last start, her first run for Freedman, was a highly promising effort. The 3rd and 4th runners home have since won comfortably at provincial level. Is bred to get this trip and looks well placed.

RACE 5 - 2:06pm 2YO HCP (900m)
It took him 3 runs and cost a lot of punters a fair amount before he finally saluted but the regally named KING did that in similar race last start. Many times in racing, once a horse wins, the penny drops and he goes on with it. I think that will happen with this big bloke. He's fast and knows how to gallop now.

May 5

Race 1 - 11:52AM ASAHI SUPER DRY CLASS 2 HANDICAP(SCALED +0.5KG) (2365 METRES)

A couple of these get valuable weight allowances but that all might be immaterial at race’s end as EQUIPPED, simply looks better than these. He can stay all day and is in fine form.

Race 4 - 1:37PM EMERALD VALLEY CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

Yet another small field. Racing NSW has to act soon and fix this broken BM point system. Anyway, we play what’s in front of us and MULTIMEDIA now 3rd up, looks ready. Perfectly placed here and has drawn to get the one one during the run. Looms largest.

Race 8 - 4:17PM SENPOS POINT OF SALE - GO THE JETS F&M BENCHMARK 67 HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

Gee I like this NOTTING HILL. She looked pretty smart winning her maiden in the bush then tossed out for a spell. Two trials since have been first class and she has drawn to be about 5th on the fence to the bend. Home track here helps too and she might well be Brisbane bound after this.

April 28

Race 2 - 12:44PM VARLEY GROUP CG&E MAIDEN PLATE (1400 METRES)

If he's fit, this bloke KRISTENSEN might make a mess of these. He hasn't raced in nearly a year but he showed some good grit when last in work. His maiden 3rd was when he led to near home, run down by a horse called Trapeze Artist. Problems have haunted him but Gai and Adrian have given him 3 trials and expect a bold showing here.

Race 4 - 1:54PM RADFORD SHOPFITTERS F&M MAIDEN PLATE (1400 METRES)

If they choose to take a sit on this speedy filly ALL TOO FREE then they may get a result. She led in town last start and was gunned down late to just miss a place. Fitter now and is bred to settle then come home. Watch market moves because she may be pretty handy. Her stablemate, Jawhara can run the quinella.

Race 8 - 4:34PM JOHN WHITMORE MEMORIAL F&M BENCHMARK 72 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

Gee I hope I'm not missing something here because all the talk is about Organza and Play - two last start maiden winners. And narrow winners at that. I'm at a loss as to how their form can compare to PARIS FOR ME who can rattle off fast sectionals and win races at this level. Those other fillies have never been near this grade. To me, Paris For Me looks a special.

March 31

Race 1 - 1:29PM GIFT OF MUSIC CG&E MAIDEN HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

I like the 2YO here MANDALONG TAPIT. Yes he's the baby of the field, but he's shown enough in 2 city starts to suggest this trip suits. And he'll appreciate drop in grade as his first trips to the track have been against stakes grade horses. Big grey boy who will be flying home.

Race 6 - 4:35PM RURAL AID F&M MAIDEN HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

This also represents a big drop in grade for YOUNGSTAR, who after finishing last in a BM 68, came out and won a barrier trial. Suited in maiden grade here and should be making ground late.

Race 8 - 5:55PM POLYTRACK PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS QUALIFIER (1400 METRES)

Kris Lees accepted with 7 runners and another 2 of the emergencies. And he should quinella this big race with REACH FOR HEAVEN and the improving Hallelujah Boy. Both are in form, can hit the line hard, appreciate this trip, and are on their home track. Preference goes to Reach For Heaven because he has drawn the best. Yet another terrific race coming up.

February 17

Race 4 - 4:04PM MAIDEN HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

The Chris Waller-trained SCRATCHES ran home gamely on debut to land 2nd place behind the subsequent city winner Wedgies. So with natural improvement that makes her the one to beat.

Race 6 - 5:29PM MAIDEN PLATE (1850 METRES)

The thing about this race is that none of them have been this far. So it may well be, as it often is in longer maidens, the leader mid race hangs too tough and wins. It looks as though KUNG FU MASTER will roll forward and take that role and probably wins too.

Race 8 - 6:45PM  F&M CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

Even field but Kris Lees holds the key. His in form galloper UNBRIDLED POWER has been runner up past 3 this grade, all of which she sat back in 6th to the bend and ran on. At home track here and looks well placed.

What Bets To Place at Newcastle Races

There are a number of ways to bet on horse racing this weekend from a standard win or place bet to quadrellas and multibets.

SINGLE: The most common bet. The single bet involves betting on your selection to win, place, or both (each-way). If betting each-way (see our guide for what an each-way bet is), the stake is doubled as you are betting on your selection to win, and also to place.

QUINELLA: A Quinella bet is available on every thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race provided there are at least three or more runners. To win a Quinella, you must successfully predict the 1st and 2nd placegetters in any order

EXACTA: An exacta is exactly the same as a quinella. However, you must successfully predict the 1st and 2nd placegetters in the correct order

TRIFECTA: A Trifecta bet is available on every thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race provided there are at least four or more runners. To win a Trifecta, you must successfully predict the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placegetters in a given race.

FIRST4: A First4 bet is available on most thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race provided there are at least four or more runners. To win a First4, you must successfully predict the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th placegetters in a given race.

MYSTERY BET: A Mystery Bet takes the guess work out of picking a Trifecta and is generated by the betting agency’s computer. The computer system will randomly select three runners and if they fill the placings you win the Trifecta.

QUADDIE: A Quaddie bet, or Quadrella bet as it is fully known, is available on most thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race meetings. A quaddie is betting on the winners of four nominated races, which are typically the last four races of any meeting, and is a very popular bet.

MULTIBET: Multibets offer a great way to secure big winning returns on your bets as you combine various bets into one, and are proving to be an extremely popular way to bet. A multibet combines any number of bets from two to 25 into one single bet and dramatically increases the odds.

PATENT BET: A Patent bet is similar to a three-leg multibet but is made up of seven separate bets: three singles, three doubles and a trio. Where a multibet requires all selections to win for a return, a patent bet will yield a return from just one winner.

ALL-IN BETTING: All-In betting involves a bookmaker offering fixed odds on selected feature races prior to the declaration of the final field. All-In betting on the Melbourne Cup, for example, is available for the better part of 12 months leading into the event. The risk with All-In Betting is that you will not receive your stake back if your horse is scratched.
