Newcastle Tips - July 7

Race 1 - 11:19AM HUNTER BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION MAIDEN PLATE (1400 METRES)
Match race in two between Be Mindful and MASCOT. I like the Team Hawkes Mascot - on the proviso they ride him behind the speed. If he leads, he will take catching but I think Be Mindful will do it. If he comes across and parks in the one, one, which is how I suggest they will ride him, I think he has too many guns over the final 200m. Intriguing race.

Race 5 - 1:39PM BERESFIELD BOWLING CLUB 2YO MAIDEN PLATE (1200 METRES)
This may well prove to be a high class provincial 2YO race because a couple look gifted. I like HORN. I saw him trial and he was impressive. Not so on debut when well beaten 6th, but I think there were excuses like very heavy track, getting too far back etc. Follow up here.

Race 7 - 2:54PM TORONTO WORKERS CLUB BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP (1890 METRES)
This may be the best bet anywhere in the country. Chris Waller's 3YO SHADAL has won just one race, in England, but his effort at Canterbury last start when 3rd was better than any of these have ever run. Looks a special.

June 30

Race 1 - 11:49AM CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (2340 METRES)
This looks a put in take out affair for the top weight NAHUEL. Will probably only be odds-on but should win by a minute. Multi him up with the other tips.
Result (1st - $1.50)

Race 5 - 2:09PM NELSON BAY BOWLO 2YO MAIDEN PLATE (900 METRES)
Bare All for Chris Waller was good first up when 2nd this grade then never a threat at Canterbury. Place show if he runs his best again, because I just loved how MICK THE HAT gathered his rivals in when coursing the widest to win his trial. Accelerated away like a smart horse to win with head on chest. Watch betting.
Result (2nd)

Race 8 - 4:09PM PALMER FAMILY BENCHMARK 69 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)
Just love it when in form 3kg kids get rides on the best horse in the race. And here we have Patty Scorse on top of WHAT COULD BE. The 3kg allowance means this bloke, now he's 3rd up, is both fit, ready and the fastest. Big show off his good city run when 4th last start.
Result (2nd)

June 23

Race 5 - 2:10PM CABAC CLASS 2 HANDICAP (900 METRES)
The economics of class look the play here. ALL CARISMA is first up and will need the run and form is generally over slightly longer trips, but that form has also been achieved in better fields. Two recent trials should have him fit enough and he looks to run away from these late.
Result (2nd)

Race 7 - 3:30PM NHP ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)
BOMBARDIER was set a task first up having not raced for nearly a year. He ran up on speed to the bend but faded final 150m when 9th in better grade in town. Many fitness things can happen after one tough on pace run. Is fitter here and back in class so expect a much better showing.
Result (unplaced)

Race 8 - 4:10PM AFL ROGUE BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)
Interesting race this. A few months back LADY I AM took to the races at Cessnock and won a Class 1 with her head on her chest by nearly 4 lengths. In the ensuing months, she has been transferred to the Team Snowden yard. Two trials have her in good shape and she might be good enough to make a mess of these first up.
Result (4th)

June 9

Race 1 - 11:36AM BIS INDUSTRIES MAIDEN PLATE (900 METRES)
Short race to open the day for us and that probably suits PAMPLEMOUSSE here. He's had 3 get to know the game starts thus far and he has sat off the pace and made ground late to place at past 2 runs. Should be in the one, one trail here and with his finish, looks to finish too well.
Result (1st - $2.40)

Race 2 - 12:11PM MATO MAIDEN HANDICAP (1200 METRES)
Gee the form around this maiden galloper of Jason Attard's, MAGNIFICA, is pretty handy. Firstly, he's had 2 starts so is ready to fire up, but start one, he was 3rd, and the 2nd horse Napoli, has since won like an exciting prospect. Magnifica then raced at provincials and was close up 5th where the 2nd horse, Spin Bowles, has since come out and won. Should be hard to hold out here.
Result (3rd)

Race 6 - 2:41PM ALFABS MAIDEN HANDICAP (1850 METRES)
Really like the old saying, 'where there is smoke, there is fire.' Apply it to this import NAHUEL in this. On his Aussie debut last start he was backed from $4 into $2.90 and was a bit one-paced all way, but battled away to grab 3rd. Longer trip here is in his favour and looks tougher now with that run under his belt. Nearly a good thing, I believe.
Result (1st - $2.80)

May 19

RACE 1 - 11:36am Class 2 HCP (900m)
I think LANGOUSTINE will enjoy this race a lot more than she did last start. That day, in a BM 70 city race, she drew 11 and was deep for most of the early stages before pushing on to be 2nd around home bend. Naturally weakened final stages but was beaten just 2 lengths. Is easier race here, has rails draw and carries less weight. Should turn it around.
Result (4th)

RACE 2 - 12:16pm MAIDEN Plate (1400m)
This filly VERLAN was formerly trained at Goulburn but has been moved to Richard Freedman's stable. And her 2nd in a maiden last start, her first run for Freedman, was a highly promising effort. The 3rd and 4th runners home have since won comfortably at provincial level. Is bred to get this trip and looks well placed.
Result (1st - $1.65)

RACE 5 - 2:06pm 2YO HCP (900m)
It took him 3 runs and cost a lot of punters a fair amount before he finally saluted but the regally named KING did that in similar race last start. Many times in racing, once a horse wins, the penny drops and he goes on with it. I think that will happen with this big bloke. He's fast and knows how to gallop now.
Result (1st - $3.10)

What Bets To Place at Newcastle Races

There are a number of ways to bet on horse racing this weekend from a standard win or place bet to quadrellas and multibets.

SINGLE: The most common bet. The single bet involves betting on your selection to win, place, or both (each-way). If betting each-way (see our guide for what an each-way bet is), the stake is doubled as you are betting on your selection to win, and also to place.

QUINELLA: A Quinella bet is available on every thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race provided there are at least three or more runners. To win a Quinella, you must successfully predict the 1st and 2nd placegetters in any order

EXACTA: An exacta is exactly the same as a quinella. However, you must successfully predict the 1st and 2nd placegetters in the correct order

TRIFECTA: A Trifecta bet is available on every thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race provided there are at least four or more runners. To win a Trifecta, you must successfully predict the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placegetters in a given race.

FIRST4: A First4 bet is available on most thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race provided there are at least four or more runners. To win a First4, you must successfully predict the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th placegetters in a given race.

MYSTERY BET: A Mystery Bet takes the guess work out of picking a Trifecta and is generated by the betting agency’s computer. The computer system will randomly select three runners and if they fill the placings you win the Trifecta.

QUADDIE: A Quaddie bet, or Quadrella bet as it is fully known, is available on most thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race meetings. A quaddie is betting on the winners of four nominated races, which are typically the last four races of any meeting, and is a very popular bet.

MULTIBET: Multibets offer a great way to secure big winning returns on your bets as you combine various bets into one, and are proving to be an extremely popular way to bet. A multibet combines any number of bets from two to 25 into one single bet and dramatically increases the odds.

PATENT BET: A Patent bet is similar to a three-leg multibet but is made up of seven separate bets: three singles, three doubles and a trio. Where a multibet requires all selections to win for a return, a patent bet will yield a return from just one winner.

ALL-IN BETTING: All-In betting involves a bookmaker offering fixed odds on selected feature races prior to the declaration of the final field. All-In betting on the Melbourne Cup, for example, is available for the better part of 12 months leading into the event. The risk with All-In Betting is that you will not receive your stake back if your horse is scratched.
