Racing Bet of the Day July 11 - peak pattern leads to Oliver’s mare

  • 8kg weight drop and peak fitness to advantage.
  • Getting clear the main concern.
  • Confidence rating: 85%

The Luke Oliver-trained High Sierra really looks set to peak when she lines up in Race 5, the Ladbrokes Odds Boost Handicap (2100m) at Sandown Lakeside on Wednesday.

The four-year-old daughter of Redwood scored a narrow maiden win over 1856m at her third run in last preparation and then really impressed with a 2.5-lengths victory in a BM64 at Moonee Valley when stepping up to 2040m.

Oliver gave the lightly-raced mare a two-month break and dropped her back to 1500m where jockey Daniel Moor declared she needed the run.

25 days later, she ran a much-improved 3rd placing over 1600m, and then with another 19 days between runs, she closed hard late to finish a length from the winner over 1733m.

She now steps up to a more suitable 2100m journey, and while she faces a steep class rise, she also drops a massive 8kg as she goes from carrying 59.5kg to carrying 51.5kg after apprentice Lachlan King’s 3kg claim.

Almalita should set a genuine pace here, and if King can get High Sierra off the fence with plenty of time to wind up, I’ve no doubt she’ll be charging home over the top of them.

If you were lucky enough to get $8 when markets first went up then great, but even at her current quote of $5 (as of 5pm Tuesday), she still represents good value.
