Ramornie Handicap Tips - Edmonds’ pair can fight it out

  • Strong hand for Toby Edmonds with runners including the top pair in betting.

I’m not overly enthused by the price on offer for Havasay in Wednesday’s Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) at Grafton, but I think he’s the horse to beat with even luck.

Trainer Toby Edmonds has the son of Rothesay flying this campaign, and his last start effort in the WJ Healy Stakes (1200m) at Doomben was a real eye-catcher.

He settled to the rear, came five wide on the bend and really charged home out wide until he seemed to peak on his run with 100m to go.

That was to be expected considering how much ground he covered on the corner and was going into that race with a month between runs.

However, he does seem to sprint better fresh, and it looks like Edmonds has the balance of freshness and fitness spot on for Wednesday’s assignment with 18 days between runs at his fifth start this campaign.

Havasay was beaten two starts back by stablemate Tyzone who is favourite for the Ramorie, but his last start effort at the same track and trip rated six lengths above his previous effort so he may still be on an upward spiral.

Regular rider Matthew Mcgillivray stays aboard and the pair have drawn ideally in gate 2.

There is plenty of early speed here, and although it’s not ideal to be relying on luck and clear running in the straight, inside gates are favoured over sprint trip at Grafton, and horses generally get their chance down the 400m straight.

The Monstar is the class runner, but as well as giving away plenty of weight to some handy horses, he’s copped an outside gate and maps to get caught wide unless he burns to early fuel.

Likewise, Zestful has drawn wide but is a major player with her brilliant first-up record and three nice barrier trials to get her fit.

Tyzone maps well here and has great form this campaign, but I just think Havasay may have more upside and can finish best with a soft run in transit.
