Randwick Tips - June 24

RICHARD OF YORKE deserves to win this. He's been up and contesting this class of race for what seems an eternity but continues to hold form and race strongly. The very heavy track here will sort the men from the boys and only the truest and fittest will survive. On that score this bloke ticks the most boxes for mine. Collateral to box on fairly for minor money.

Good race but I am keen on one here - OLD NORTH. He's Godolphin trained and is 4th up today. Last start in this grade was very gutsy to grab 3rd and this trip at this stage of his prep is picture perfect. Will test these. Marenostro to improve and run 2nd.

I'm loading up on this bad boy WILD'N'FAMOUS. Finally has everything in his favour. Is super fit as he's 4th up here, is perfectly drawn, can handle it wet and weight allowance is big help. Looks a special. Pelathronius to plug on for 2nd.

Previous Randwick Tips:

June 10

Race 2 - 12:05PM $100,000 ANDERSON HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

Hard to assess anything because the track will be so wet, but if it were good you'd be declaring IN TIMES OF WAR. She just keeps getting better every start and is ready to blow this mob apart. She beat a higher graded field last start and looked great doing it. For 2nd here, toss in Difficult To Get.

Race 3 - 12:40PM $60,000 TAB HIGHWAY HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

This is a very high grade Class 3 Highway. At least 5 of these can and will win in town. But it would need to be a good field because this Mudgee horse NICTOCK is a flying machine. He’s the size of a pit pony but he runs like a whippet. He's first up so is fresh here and will have to charge across from out wide. Greg Ryan in town on a Saturday is a massive pointer as well. Il Bandito is also unbeaten and can grab 2nd.

Race 7 - 3:10PM $150,000 AHC JUNE STAKES (1100 METRES)

Kris Lees will bring FELINES to town for this Listed race and he will go home with the cash. She looks way better than these. Has won on a heavy in the past as well. Boss Lane to run 2nd but topweight wins comfortably.

May 27

Race 7 - 3:00pm $150,000 McKell Cup 2400m

This is the main race at Randwick on Saturday. And it's not a bad renewal. I like ALLERGIC because he has the best form against top horses. Admittedly he has a big weight but, you know, staying races generally go to the best horse and I'm certain Allergic is that horse. Departing trainer Darren Beadman has been winning with everything of late and this would be a nice cherry on his impressive pie.

Race 8 - $100,000 Cancer Foundation Hcp $100,000 1100m

The lighter weighted horses here will probably be in favour of punters but I'm going the opposite direction. I like the fresh but out of form BOSS LANE here. Mainly because he's back to handicap conditions and he's at Randwick. He will cop a nice run just behind the pace and I think at big each-way odds he will find the line and at least place for us.

Race 9 - $100,000 Solutions Hcp 1400m

COOLCRAFT must hate the sight of the Godolphin blue silks having seen them zip past him on two different horses his past two starts. He's wound up 3rd each time and they were in better grade. Should be super fit now and drawn perfectly. Oh, and best of all - no Godolphin runners in this!

April 22

Race 3 - 12:35PM $100,000 ATC HERITAGE CENTRE HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

With the scratching of the potential star Egg Tart, this good little race has been thrown wide open. I’ll be on CAERLESS CHOICE, the bush horse, because I think he's pretty smart. Track will play to suit him and he's 3rd up. He ran to second at the 100m mark in the recent Country Champs Final here and faded last 25m. Fitter now. Can atone.

This NZ-bred, Victorian-trained galloper SURVIVED appeals the most here. He is a solid country cups type of horse with age and experience on his side. He is tough as old boots and is actually in very well at the weights here following the claim. Should be near lead all way and will out grind these. PARAGON is a tough stayer too and will battle away for the minors.

Race 8 - 3:35PM $2 million SCHWEPPES SYDNEY CUP (3200 METRES)

I do think the way the Cup unfolded when abandoned 2 weeks back will mirror what will happen here. With a twist. I think Godolphin's 3rd place getter that day PENGLAI PAVILION will benefit the most from the tough hit out and prevail this time. Winkers go on and he goes well with that gear change. His stablemate Polarization and the toppie Who Shot The Barman, will be right in the finish too.

April 15

Race 4 - 1:50PM $150,000 TAB HALL MARK STAKES (1200 METRES)

TAKEDOWN just looks deliciously placed here. He goes well first up and is so big the weight wont worry. He's proven his class against better rivals than this and has trialled well going into the race. The money will come for him on track. Very hard to beat with REDZEL the only main concern.

Race 6 - 3:05PM $500,000 MOET & CHANDON CHAMPAGNE STAKES (1600 METRES)

Team Snowden has for a while laid claims to being the best training set up in Sydney and can notch another Group 1 upon their burgeoning belt in this with their star colt INVADER. Superstar colt, already a Group 1 winner and looks to have this at his mercy. Ground home too well to beat a better field in winning the 1400m Sires’ Produce last start. So far 11 of the past 20 Champagne Stakes have been won by horses who just won the Sires’. Is getting better with racing, has the best rider on board and drawn the rails. Easy to tip. THE MISSION is an under-rated baby. He led all way to win in the wet at Group 3 level recently beating some smart colts then backed up in the Sires' Produce and somehow was 10th on the bend, 3-wide a long way off the lead. Kept fighting and finding something to claim 6th in the end. Not as much pressure here - he looms as a big outsider with a major hope.

Race 7 - 3:45PM $600,000 SCHWEPPES ALL AGED STAKES (1400 METRES)

LE ROMAIN disappointed in the Group 1 Doncaster after striking bother being held up at a vital stage. He'd done well this time up so trainer Kris Lees tipped him out for a spell. But 4 days later he was bucking his brand off. He put on weight, was feeling extraordinarily good so Lees brought him for a tilt at this race. Winkers go back on for the first time since he scored a Group 1 win in Melbourne last year and Hughie will steer. Fresh, lively, track getting better by the minute, and with top rider - he looks the goods. Harest to beat will be ENGLISH who won this race so gallantly last year.

April 8

Such a good, competitive lineup of provincial trained gallopers for this final. Plenty of pace and plenty of come-from-behind runners engaged. I like BETTER NOT BLUE for Michelle Ritchie. We saw a female train the Country Champs Final winner and I suspect that can occur here too. Better Not Blue has a powerhouse finishing burst and showed that in the heat when a flying 2nd. Fitter now, and that heat was 1350m, so extra trip suits here also. CLEVEDEN BAY is an emerging talent and won her heat impressively too and as such will be running onto into the placings I believe.

Race 8 - 3:55PM $2million SCHWEPPES SYDNEY CUP (3200 METRES)

If there's one thing old WHO SHOT THEBARMAN knows how to do, it is run strong two mile races. He's been in 7 of them, all at Group 1 level and his record is great. He won the Group 1 Auckland Cup, ran 2nd in this Group 1 Sydney Cup and has a Group 1 Melbourne Cup placing to his highlight reel also. And he seems back in sterling order this time. Ran 4th in the Group 1 BMW last start and got home hard. Looks primed to win this.

Race 9 - 4:35PM $1million COOLMORE LEGACY STAKES (1600 METRES)

How can you go past winning form? And SILENT SEDITION just knows how to win. She's won nearly $1 million in prizemoney from her consistency over just 16 starts. Last start she finished doggedly to win the Group 1 1200m William Reid Stakes after running a close 2nd in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic this grade. Has drawn ideally and is ready to ring up another gong here. Is cherry ripe too and although never been to the heavy, she has wet track form.

April 1

Race 6 - 3:10PM $1,000,000 INGLIS SIRES' (1400 METRES)
Traditionally, the intensity of the Golden Slipper zaps the energy from the legs of those backing up in the Sires'. But that may not be the case this time. All the major hopes bar FROLIC have drawn off the track here. And on top of that most of them will be out the back. The Kiwi SUMMER PASSAGE has run fast times in New Zealand at stakes level and must rate a show, but Frolic and TULIP ran the best in the Slipper and that should put them ahead of the others. GUNNISON is unbeaten but there's a question mark over him regarding his talent at this level. Stakes performers generally show up in this.

Race 7 - 3:50PM $2,000,000 BMW AUSTRALIAN DERBY (2400 METRES)

What a great renewal of this iconic race. The Kiwi pair GINGERNUTS and JON SNOW just add so much class to the race. We also have the Victoria Derby winner PRIZED ICON, who is back in form, engaged. The Kiwi pair should be in the first five early and they are both extra strong stayers. Group 1 Randwick Guineas winner INFERENCE will be getting home strongly too from about midfield at the bend. So who will be last man standing?

Race 8 - 4:30PM $2.5million DARLEY T J SMITH STAKES (1200 METRES)
This is an impossible race to pick. The big grey CHAUTAUQUA will be a mile back, as he was last year when he stormed home to win. But can he this time? He’s won this race twice but isn’t as fast as he once was. He is extremely fit, however, going into it. TERRAVISTA is up and down but if the pace is on he will be in the firing line. FELL SWOOP is back better than ever but needs it as dry as possible. He will be close enough to strike while ENGLISH and VOODOO LAD will get back also. The weights do not suit ASTERN and RUSSIAN REVOLUTION and SPIETH should be absolutely ready to pounce. So as they charge to the line, who finishes fastest?

March 4

I truly think if she steps away and can run through the going, SCARLET RAIN is a special. Almost a certainty. Is just too fast and powerful for her rivals. FAITH'S ENCORE trialled brilliantly but she is up against a potential Group 1 horse in Scarlet Rain.

You could write the exact speech for ENGLISH here as I have for Scarlet Rain above. Trialled like a superstar last month and wet track is only issue. Looks grades above these.

Race 7 - 4:10PM $1,000,000 GIRVAN WAUGH RANDWICK GUINEAS (1600 METRES)

This bloke MAN FROM UNCLE doesn't win in any flashy fashion, but he does keep winning and that's the key here. He races these horses and beats them. The mile here looks ideal and it is his home track. Outside draw on this extremely wet track will be an advantage. COMIN' THROUGH is fitter now and is hardest to beat.

February 25

Race 2 - 1:25PM $60,000 TAB HIGHWAY PLATE (1600 METRES)

This is a fascinating highway. We get a good look at DREADLOCK who comes from the central West. He has form around some of the best Country Champ runners in that region. He isn't eligible for the Country Champs but he's up agaibnst RUTHLESS AGENT here who has form around some of the best Country Champs hopefuls from the southern Diustricts region. Dreadlock is pretty strong and since joing the Clint Lundholm barn he has shown great ability out west. He deserves a crack at this garde and I think he can win. but ruthless Agent and Medieval from up north have talent too. They should trifecta the race.

The unraced SONGLIKE trialled like a superstar the other day. So she must be respected but TEASPOON has the form on the board. Two starts for two wins and I'm a firm believer in babies holding their form and racing truly. Therefore I'm all over Teaspoon to jump and be on or near the pace all the way here. Very interested to see what Songlike does.

Race 8 - 5:10PM $200,000 GUY WALTER STAKES (1400 METRES)

FIRST SEAL has been the class of her age group (outside of Winx) for a few years now and as such should finish right over the top of this strong fillies and mares field. When she's on she's a genuine Gr 1 class galloper.

February 13

Race 1 - 1.20PM $100,000 RANVET HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

I love these Hong Kong raced horses coming back to Australia and here we have old stager SAVVY NATURE. He has been with Gai and Adrian for about 5 months now and he is absolutely flying. Will sit just off the pace and I think he explodes clear to win easily.

Race 4 - 3.10PM $250,000 INGLIS CLASSIC (1200 METRES)

I know that FIRE STOKER is a bush horse but any horse that can sit behind Mossman Gorge, then run him down, has to be good. Very good in fact and this bloke did just that on debut. Drawn to be in top spot all way and city-slickers will know his name after this.

Race 8 - 5:40PM $250,000 THE STAR APOLLO STAKES (1400 METRES)

I'm not even going to bother you with why WINX wins. Here's the trifecta I will be having. 1. (11) WINX, 2. (1) Hartnell, 3 (8) Sacred Master

How can you ignore the stunning trial NANCY put in a few weeks back? Team Snowden has snared Hugh Bowman which just means one thing: Nancy is flying this prep.

February 4

I have a real feeling that rain will fall on Friday night thus rendering the track a little damp. That will suit STRAWBERRY BOY. What might suit him even more is the fact he's 3rd up here, and is in quite well at the weights given he will be in the lead...I think all the way. Big trial winner recently too

Race 4 - 2:35PM $100,000 THE CHI-X SPRINT (1000 METRES)

DENMAGIC is the class of the race and she will be steaming home. But this Kiwi-born DAL CIELO has found a new lease on life since being trained just for sprinting. Last start he crushed a solid stakes class field and is ready for this lot too. Will get back and charge home

Race 5 - 3:10PM $60,000 TAB HIGHWAY HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

Intriguing question one must ask themselves about this race. Given ALL SUMMER LONG consistently was about 1 1/4 inferior to the brilliant CLEARLY INNOCENT at this time last year, would you have Clearly Innocent in this if he was engaged? I would and therefore I'm on this bloke too. Astute trainer Greg Bennett would not bring this bloke to town if he wasn't sure he'd run well in this.

January 21

BURNING ENERGY is the type of horse most owners would just love to have. He jumps, gets up on the speed, is always there fighting away bravely down the running, and invariably collects a cheque. And you can bet your bottom dollar he'll do the same here. Back in grade and can lead all the way.

Great race coming up. EQUADOR is the class but man he's been set a task here with this weight. He likes to roll forward but so too does OXFORD POET and with the much lighter weight on his back, he should lead Equador. And that just may bring the smart horse undone. Oxford Poet ran a blinder in a  strong sprint race first up. He has the wheels and seems back better than ever. I like him here.

Race 8 - HUAWEI HANDICAP (1400m)

HOGMANAY looks hard to beat ....IF he gets to cross and lead. Was ridden that way and won two in a row this grade then last start sat off pace and only plugged home for 4th. DARK STEEL has pace so he may kick up and make it interesting, but his form is tapering off. It’s a tough race but consistency will be the key final stages.

January 14

Race 1 - 1:00PM $100,000 TAB REWARDS PLATE (1100 METRES)

The heavily boomed Godolphin horse PIRACY who failed in the Breeders Plate, is back in this. And his trial leading into it was very good. But the word is the Gerald Ryan-trained MENARI is very, very smart. With the claim it is expected to jump straight on the bunny and run them off their legs. Put Piracy in for the quinella.

Race 2 - 1:40PM $100,000 #THERACES HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

This in form mare BUTTERBOOM looks wonderfully placed in this field - especially since the engagement of apprentice rider Nick Heywood. That claim brings her in unbelievably well at the weights. She's talented in better grade so she will feel like this is taking candy from a baby.

Race 6 - 4:00PM $100,000 TAB HANDICAP (2400 METRES)

Consistency in a racehorse is a great foundation for a punter to follow. And in this, the Kris Lees-trained ADMIRAL JELLO fits that bill to a tee. He's no superstar but gee he is honest. Always puts himself into a good position and likes to fight hard down the straight. James Doyle to ride here and he is a superior rider over a trip. Looks a great show.

What Bets To Place at Randwick Races

There are a number of ways to bet on horse racing this weekend from a standard win or place bet to quadrellas and multibets.

SINGLE: The most common bet. The single bet involves betting on your selection to win, place, or both (each-way). If betting each-way (see our guide for what an each-way bet is), the stake is doubled as you are betting on your selection to win, and also to place.

QUINELLA: A Quinella bet is available on every thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race provided there are at least three or more runners. To win a Quinella, you must successfully predict the 1st and 2nd placegetters in any order

EXACTA: An exacta is exactly the same as a quinella. However, you must successfully predict the 1st and 2nd placegetters in the correct order

TRIFECTA: A Trifecta bet is available on every thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race provided there are at least four or more runners. To win a Trifecta, you must successfully predict the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placegetters in a given race.

FIRST4: A First4 bet is available on most thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race provided there are at least four or more runners. To win a First4, you must successfully predict the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th placegetters in a given race.

MYSTERY BET: A Mystery Bet takes the guess work out of picking a Trifecta and is generated by the betting agency’s computer. The computer system will randomly select three runners and if they fill the placings you win the Trifecta.

QUADDIE: A Quaddie bet, or Quadrella bet as it is fully known, is available on most thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race meetings. A quaddie is betting on the winners of four nominated races, which are typically the last four races of any meeting, and is a very popular bet.

MULTIBET: Multibets offer a great way to secure big winning returns on your bets as you combine various bets into one, and are proving to be an extremely popular way to bet. A multibet combines any number of bets from two to 25 into one single bet and dramatically increases the odds.

PATENT BET: A Patent bet is similar to a three-leg multibet but is made up of seven separate bets: three singles, three doubles and a trio. Where a multibet requires all selections to win for a return, a patent bet will yield a return from just one winner.

ALL-IN BETTING: All-In betting involves a bookmaker offering fixed odds on selected feature races prior to the declaration of the final field. All-In betting on the Melbourne Cup, for example, is available for the better part of 12 months leading into the event. The risk with All-In Betting is that you will not receive your stake back if your horse is scratched.

Randwick Race Track Description

Randwick is the largest racetrack in New South Wales and all races are run in a clockwise direction. It is a sweeping track with a rise from the 300m mark to the winning post in the home straight.

As well as the main track, Randwick Racecourse contains a second track known as Kensington. Due to large rainfall in the area, Kensington has been reconstructed using the Strathayr racing surface which is similar to Moonee Valley.

Strathayr is a turf cover over a base of sand, this means it is a free draining track which can take a substantial amount of rain without affecting the rating.
