Rosehill Tips - June 17

Race 3 - 12:35PM $60,000 TAB HIGHWAY HANDICAP (1500 METRES)

Tremendous Highway. Top three look to have it in the bag though. Forever Newyork is talented, even though a bit hit and miss. He can muster good speed midrace and with the claim here rates highly. So too Zamex who won a Highway recently racing clear final stages. Tough draw though makes him place chance. THE FRICK seems the one. He is an emerging talent from Mudgee and he can sit wherever he wants to from this great draw. Greg Ryan has many options because the horse can accelerate in straight. He’s going for 3 on the bounce here.

Race 5 - 1:45PM $1200,000 TAB REWARDS HANDICAP (1500 METRES)

Despite the big weights this might be a day for top weights. KELLYVILLE FLYER has a fair bit on these in class. She can really sizzle home when her mind is into it and added benefit here, she loves it wet. Big danger. Signposted led and battled on well for 5th this grade last start. Fitter now, while LIAPARI should be near pace from this great draw all the way.

Race 6 - 2:25PM $100,000 KENSEI HANDICAP (2000 METRES)

Good strong winter staying field this. DESTINY"S KISS is 2nd up here but does have far better form than all of these - has won over $1million thank you very much. Also loves it wet and despite big weight, should race home strongly. TUCANCHOO is close to a win. Chased home the only speed in the race all the way to the post last start and gets in better at the weights this time. Supply And Deman was that speed and should lead and run boldly again.

Race 3 - 12:35PM SCHWEPPES HANDICAP (1500 METRES) $100,000

If weights and measures count for anything in racing then we may see them come to the fore here. Dagny is classy, probably is Black Type bound, but in this race I think she is too far from WAHNG WAH in the weights. She too has upside and was less then 2 lengths from Dagny last start. Meets 4.5kg better this time around. They appear the quinella.

Race 7 - 3:05PM EREMEIN HANDICAP (1800 METRES) $100,000

Again weights control the thoughts about this race...and the outcome. At the weights, So Willie, MIGHTY LUCKY and Supply And Demand look the trifecta. They are the best weighted runners on recent form. I like the old boy Mighty Lucky who got checked last start in the Scone Cup in the straight yet still kept coming. Meets a few of these really well at the we weights and he is best suited to the trip too. The others battle out for minors.

Race 8 - 3:45PM OCTAGONAL HANDICAP (1400 METRES) $100,000

Gee I like ROYAL TUDOR in this. He just reads perfectly placed - as long as he doesn't go mad out in front. This is a tough field of seasoned gallopers but at the weights I see him being 6th early, hopefully with ample cover, then unleashibng late. Trip is ideal. Sir Bacchus the one to beat.

May 20

Race 1 - JOHN MILLER HALL OF FAME HANDICAP (1200m) 11:25am

Juveniles are intriguing creatures. They more often than not run right up to their ability and it's that theory and fact I'm banking on here. Godolphin 2YO VIRIDINE beat pretty much the same class of field on debut carrying 57kg. He should take improvement from that and if so, he wins again. Has 58kg this time. Silence is the one to beat here.

Race 2 - GEORGE MOORE HALL OF FAME HANDICAP (1400m) 12:00pm

You just have to admire fillies and mares who find form and just try so hard. We have one of them here in the form of WHITE MOSS. She's both fast and tough and has been sparring successfully with this grade past 3 runs....all wins. Should lead and take catching.

Very hard race but I loved the way the Team Snowden mare MARAAM got to the line to win last start. She was 3rd up that day and really extended. This is harder but she's in form. Anisha is consistent and is right in this too.

May 6

Chris Waller has 4 in this. He had 6 but 2 came out leaving a conundrum. Which one wins? Well I rather fancy this OKLAHOMA GIRL. She may just be the real deal. Her finishing burst to beat similar field last start was quite telling and she is in career best form. Hardest to beat is one of Waller’s other runners, Octavian Augustus.

Another terrific race. BETTER NOT BLUE has been a long time out of the winners list but he’s ready to shine in this. Likes rto get back, relax then charge and the track will play to his advantageous this time around. is 4th up into this campaign and sectionals past couple of races have been excellent. Roaring To Win to chase him home.

This is the Listed $150,000 Lord Mayor’s Cup over 2000m and I think it’s made to order for the mare HAPPY HANNAH. She made up ground late last start on a day when nothing was making ground. Has the limit here, will be out wide once heads turn for home and can sprout wings final stages to fly past Sons Of John who is always honest this grade.

March 25

Is this former Godolphin-owned, British-raced galloper SPECTROSCOPE another Hartnell? He looked amazing winning his Aussie debut last start and this trip should suit more. I suspect he is very, very good - probably up to Group 1 grade and if that's correct, he can finish too well and win this. Can't wait to watch it.

Kiwi visitor JON SNOW hasn't won for a while but he is so consistent in Group 1 level placing his past few. Chased home last week's Group 1 winner GINGERNUTS in the NZ Derby last start in New Zealand. So that form holds up well in Australia. Second in that Derby, incidentally, was RISING RED who has been scratched from this field. Terrific race coming up but I'm on Jon Snow. I think he'll perform better at this trip.

Race 6 - 3:30PM $1.5 million THE BMW (2400 METRES)

Very even race this year with Group 1 winners all the way through the field. HUMIDOR and JAMEKA renew their vows after waltzing their way to first and second spots in the recent Group 1 Australian Cup, while OUR IVANHOWE will undergo a vet's check to make sure he can race following his tremendous Group 1 win last Saturday. I like the 3rd home in the Australian Cup, EXOSPHERIC. I think he's worked out Aussie racing now and is super fit now. He is up to a trip that suits too.

March 18

This just looks so well set up for ALLERGIC. He showed his class all the way up to Group 1 level last campaign and while he hasn't won this time up, he's been right there in unsuitable races. Maps to be just off pace in a handy position all way and I suspect his class gets him just in front of OUR CENTURY who is the emerging talent.

You just have to love winners and this TACTICAL ADVANTAGE is just that. He's strung together his own little picket fence winning his past 4 and although this is a Listed event, under the conditions he looks very well in. Should be able to sit in about 7th spot until straightening at which time his tenacity will drive him down the outside to victory over the luckless STAR OF MONSOON.

Race 7 - 4:10PM $3.4million LONGINES GOLDEN SLIPPER (1200 METRES)

Seven last start winners - and an even spread of genders with 8 apiece. Very well-matched field and this should be a torrid battle down the running between speed and backmarkers. So who do we go for? Well I think the backmarkers hold the key. I know HOUTZEN and SHE WILL REIGN are very fast, but PARIAH, CATCHY, FORMALITY, FROLIC and DIAMOND TATHAGATA have long legs and big engines. They will be part of the chasing pack. She Will Reign has drawn 13 and in 60 runnings of this great race no horse has ever won from 13. Plus she looked uneasy in the wet last start when 2nd, so I like CATCHY. I think she is the type to run a fast and strong 1400m and on this track that's a must. Her final 200m when winning the Group 1 Blue Diamond was stunning and I think she just finds a fast lane out wide on race day and zoom, zoom, zooms home from Pariah who will be in the fighting line the whole way.

March 11

Boys vs Girls here and I'm afraid the boys will go one, two - despite this being the week for International Women's Day. DOTHRAKI and Ball Of Muscle are simply too strong for the rest of the field which are all female. Dothraki will park behind Ball Of Muscle and Fickle Folly then just unleash late to win drawing clear. Alart may get home late hard but she will be well astern of Dothraki at the finish.

Race 4 - 2:25PM $175,000 CHANDON S MAGIC NIGHT STAKES (1200 METRES)

I backed LIMBO SOUL to win the Golden Slipper quite a few weeks back and she should justify my feel for her by winning this. And in the process firm up to about $14 to win the big one. Drawn perfectly and is a no-nonsense, get out and go girl who will be on the bunny all the way. Is strong late too. Tulip and Alizee will be in the hunt at the finish too but Limbo Soul might be pretty special.

This is a strong and very even Group 2 race. But I'm on AROD who I thought was most unlucky last start when a hard-finishing 2nd to stablemate McCreery. He had to change course twice down the running and was man-handled to do so. Calmer ride and with more luck, as well as being fitter now, he finishes too gamely I suspect from He's Our Rokkii who 3rd up can lift on past two failures.

February 18

Race 3 - 2:00PM $100,000 JAMES RUSE HANDICAP (1500 METRES)

Is this the race where all the stars align for STRAWBERRY BOY? Melding if you like to a perfect storm. Because I cannot for the life of me see how they can beat him. He will go to the lead from barrier rise, control the tempo at his leisure, then his well-known grit and determination will kick in down the running. My only possible doubt is Antonio Guiseppe. How good has he come back? His trial says he is a Group horse….but how this race will pan out points toward a Strawberry Boy victory for mine.

Race 4 - 2:35PM $60,000 TAB HIGHWAY HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

This is a strong field and many will aim up in coming weeks for places in their respective Country Champs Qualifiers. But while all of them have speed and talent, I suspect ZAKYNTHOS REGRETS has the most of both elements. This is a sharp racehorse going places. Can sit right on the speed and accelerate away. Faces hardest task here but looks up to it.

Race 5 - 3:10PM $250,000 TAB SILVER SLIPPER STAKES (1100 METRES)

What a race. Three of the top five in the Gr 1 Golden Slipper betting line up here. But gee I like the filly SHE WILL REIGN. I know both colts, Veranillo and Khan have enormous wraps, and wraps from people who know what's what, but the filly is an absolute flying machine and there is no substitute for pure, sustained speed in juvenile racing. I think she jumps, leads and wins easily making her a $3.80 fav for the Slipper.

January 28

Race 5 - 3:05PM $100,000 TAB HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

We just don't know who is the best horse in this field. But we do know that Gai and Adrian's AUSTRALIANA will jump and run. He must go hard from his draw so he will be clear once they turn for home and his rider, Kerrin McEvoy, is soooo good on a front runner, that I think he can keep going and win here. Big rise in grade, I know, but he has talent.

Race 6 - 3:40PM $150,000 EXPRESSWAY STAKES (1200 METRES)

I hear it all the time, trials don't mean anything. But when you see something standout, you should pay attention. MUSIC MAGNATE looked fast and better than last time in when he won his trial in Gr 1-like style recently. If he replicates that he wins this for fun.

Race 8 - 5:00PM $100,000 #THERACES HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

SCARLET RAIN is an absolute flying machine and given that she hasn't raced for nearly a year, I'm tipping she will be so fresh she will flee the gates like an arrow from a quiver. Perfect draw to be in front early and should race away. Looks a good thing.

December 24

Race 2 - 1:20PM $100,000 ATC MEMBERSHIP HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

This is a terrific race. Sooo many up and coming stars will come from this. PIPELINE is good, FRANCE is good, JAMINZAH is good and SMART AS looks handy. But I do believe the best of them is ACHI BABA and with the pace certain to be on he will slot in behind in 4th to the turn then unleash. Might end up being one of Godolphin's better ones.

Gee this looks a ready made race for ECHO GAL. She has come back well this time in and this is the easiest race she has contested for some time. From gate 2 she can ping and may even just lead all way here. Is super fit now and astutely placed.

Race 9 - 5:40PM $100,000 TAB HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

I know all the hype will be on ESTEBAN and he will be absolutely flying home late. His 2 trials have been enormous. But at the weights, I think OPEN BOOK will prove very competitive here. Needed the run under his big weight when sent to the lead last start. That run would have tightened him up. Expect to be back off pace worse than midefild this time, and rocket home.

December 10

Race 2 - 1:20PM $100,000 #THERACES PLATE (1400 METRES)

The impact James Doyle has made in just two city meetings has been extraordinary. He improves horses - they run for him. It's that simple. And in this he's riding a horse that has unlimited talent who is going to develop into a star. ACHI BABA will sit off them and explode down the centre of the track. He's a gooden this bloke...and so is the rider.

ALART hasn't won for a while but her 2nd in open grade last start was excellent and she looks a weighted special here. Also drawn nicely. Can't wait to get on her this week....great each way bet.

Race 9 - 5:40PM $100,000 TAB.COM.AU SPRINT (1200 METRES)

Very strong, even bunch of rising stars and tried, tough gallopers. But I like the progression SUGAR BAY LEONARD is making. He's getting through the grades and stepping up each time the bar is raised. He’s very fit right now and should appreciate the trip here, the barrier, and the speed in the race.

December 3

Race 6 - 3:40PM $125,000 STARLIGHT STAKES (1100 METRES)

This is a very even field with a couple of these, including Melbourne galloper HUSSON EAGLE, headed to Queensland for the Magic Millions races in early January. He's such an honest galloper and his first up run to win was full of merit. Plenty of speed here so he will drop in behind them and unleash down the centre of the track.

Race 7 - 4:20PM $125,000 ATC CUP (2000 METRES)

I'm on CLOSING BELL here. He loomed to win last start but you could see the big weight of 61.5kg anchored him over the last 100m. He's an American bred and formerly raced galloper who has taken a bit of time to get right. I suggest he's right here.

This is the main race on the card and is chock full of interest. There will be pace aplenty early which will suit Melbourne visitor RAGEESE who likes to find his feet. He's been promising to win some nice races and if the track's playing fair by day's end, I reckon he'll be steaming home between runners. As will Berry Delicious at big odds and that's my Quinella.

November 26

A good few of these are on track for the Magic Millions in January. Vinery Stud has two in this, with two different trainers and I like one of them, REFLECTIVITY. He's a big long-striding thing who was buried away in a quiet trial recently. But I saw him. Tommy Berry has the ride and should drop him out early. He could be the first of the All Too Hard's to win as I think he might have a powerful finishing burst.

Race 4 - 2:20PM $60,000 TAB HIGHWAY HANDICAP (1500 METRES)

This toppie, DELIGHTFUL FEELING, looks the bet of the day. Is in great form, is better than these and is thrown in at the weights.

Race 7 - 4:10PM $100,000 #THERACES HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

This young fellow James Cummings really has developed a knack for getting horses ready for first up assignments and if that flows onto this race, then HIGH MIDNIGHT looks a safe bet. He's in well at the weights and there should be sufficient pace early to warrant him finding his feet before unleashing down the centre of the track. SNOOPY may run a better race for 2nd.

November 19

This is a tough meeting. Given there will be a great deal of pace on here I like MONTAUK. He looks back to his best and he will sit just off the speed created by The Bull and Eschielle. There are many chances, but in form horses speaks loudest to me.

I'm banking on Chris Waller snaring race-to-race double here with former Tulloch Lodge speedster ECHO GAL. Not many, if anyone, ever improves one that comes from Gai, but Waller is a genius and although he hasn't improved Echo Gal on paper yet, I think she stands up this time. On her day she is grease lightning, and this race is a mile different from last start.

Race 7 - 4:20PM $100,000 TAB NOVEMBER HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

I'm on one here at odds in BERRY DELICIOUS. She really has a powerful finishing burst when she is on her day and with one run under her belt this time up I suspect she will be rattling home. Nothing on her back too and she meets a few contemporaries from past campaign a lot better at the weights.

November 12

Race 1 - 12:40PM $100,000 FUNLAND AUSTRALIA HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

On a day where there are multiple real live chances in every race, I'm banking on the trial form to stand up here. VERANILLO sat three deep in trial and still managed to finish off the run very strongly winning with head on chest. Perfectly drawn to be about 3rd early and with cover, can sprout wings down the running. Is talented.

Race 5 - 3:05PM $100,000 ALL OUR MOB HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

SNIPPET’S LAND is very smart on his day and this isn't strong. Should have limited trouble slotting in and finding a nice spot. Two useful trials have him cherry ripe and I strongly urge you to respect him first up here. He has won this trip when fresh before.

Race 9 - 5:40PM $100,000 TAB REWARDS HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

At the weights, and given she is backing up one week later, which when used correctly is a winning ploy, I like INFRA DIG here. Tougher assignment than last start when sprinted too quickly late to win, but winning form is good form and the weights make her almost irresistible.

October 29

Race 1 - 12:05PM $150,000 LIDORAN GROUP PIERRO PLATE (1100 METRES)

When Pierro raced, his arch rival as a 3YO was All Too Hard. Now in the race named after him, the one most likely to win is DARHAD - a handsome son of All Too Hard. Life is strange. Adding to the mix is IPSO FACTO who is by Pierro but off his trial his form doesn’t look as strong as Darhad. He, Darhad, led and was run down near the post in a Listed race on debut. Is very fast, toughened up by that effort and he can ping and lead all way here giving his father his first ever winner!

Race 2 - 12:40PM $100,000  TRADIES CFMEU HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

What a fascinating race. We have STAR OF MONSOON, still a maiden, burdened with 61 because he rattled home and placed at Black Type level last start. Then we have unbeaten Godolphin horse OZARK who gives the impression he is pretty smart, and added to the whole equation this bush horse from Queensland, IL RICCIO, who seems so fast he might just shred this mob. Off his debut run, where he romped in by 10 lengths and ran his last 600m in a staggering 33.35sec with his head on his chest, Il Riccio can't lose this. But he will have pressure far greater mid stages than he has encountered before. Significant thing for me is that Jimmy Byrne has come to Syd to partner him. That suggests to me Il Riccio is super good.

Race 6 - 3:25PM $100,000 VINCENTS COUNTRY CLASSIC (2000 METRES)

This is the hardest race of the day to try and pick a winner - but I love country racing and follow it very closely so it's right up my alley. I'm on FLITERO here. Perfect draw, good rider, lovely weight and is in form. He went down swinging by less than a length in a 1600m Highway last start to a horse I'd rate better than these. Luck in running will play a role but the pace will be on from the get go and I think he’ll be on the fence smoking his pipe and get home very powerfully.

He's been backed and failed to win his past 10 starts and on weights and measures TORGERSEN can't beat IGGI POP home. But the race will be run to suit him and not so much Iggi this time, so I'm deferring to the mapping for help here. If he slots in about 2 pairs back, I think Torgersen has the class here on his home track to finish the race off and finally win for us.
