Townsville Tips July 10 - Cleveland Bay hopeful can win this warm-up today

  • Roy Chillemi looks set for a big day
  •  'The Missile' can make it three from four today

Things are heating up in Townsville with the Winter Carnival fast approaching. There are some great match-ups today and I have narrowed down a few of these with two I believe can get us the cash.

Today we have The Ville WFA Open, recognised as the ‘warm-up’ for the Cleveland Bay Classic and a real clash looms with Mason’s Chance, winner of the recent Battle Of The Bush Final at Doomben up against local favourite Grey Missile who is a two-time track and distance winner looking for a start in the big $100K race on July 28.

Throw in the Krystle Johnston-trained Craiglea Deken and it could very well turn into a three-horse war in the run home.

But before that battle hits the track, we look at race four on the program.

Race 4 - 3:22PM LAZY YAK 2018 RACE TO THE REEF - HEAT - OPEN Handicap (1000 METRES)
Another race that could develop into a race-to-the-line battle here with topweight CONCLUDER coming up against Easy Weekend and the Janel Ryan-trained Real Warrior. These three look to have it between them. I’m going with Concluder here who has an impeccable record both at the track and distance. He won his last two starts prior to a seven-month spell. He led from barrier to box in both those runs and withstood a real battle last start holding off a stern challenge from Rivariva who has since returned from a spell and won. Concluder wasn’t disgraced when finishing fifth, first-up here last month. Ironically it was Rivariva who won that race. Second-up at Mackay, he drew wide and found the WFA conditions unsuitable and finished mid-field. Today, he comes back to Cluden Park where he is a six-time winner and also has six victories over the 1000m trip. He is third-up today and to this point is unbeaten when third-up. The Stratum Gelding is drawn out again but with his early gate speed will cross and lead without too much trouble. He will turn in front of his main rivals here and then it’s a sprint to the line. Can they reel him in? I’m saying no but it should be one heck of a finish.

Race 5 - 3:57PM THE VILLE RESORT-CASINO WEIGHT FOR AGE (1300 METRES)
Now to the main race of the day and what a battle it will be. Traditionally known as the Cleveland Bay warm-up, several of these will definitely be there in two weeks’ time while others will be out to impress owners and trainers of their worthiness to gain a start. Atherton trainer Roy Chillemi is one of those who has his boom three-year-old GREY MISSILE entered here and he couldn’t be any fitter or in better form than he is now. Two starts back he was again too good for his age group, winning comfortably over 1300m then was beaten at the weights next start when finishing second behind Springthorpe, conceding the All Too Hard gelding 6kgs that day. Last start he bounced back with a vengeance, beating home Pure Hawk (short priced favourite in race 6 today) despite conceding him 6kgs. He drew wide that day but still managed to cross and finish too well for his rivals. He takes on the older horses today but with the form he is in, he can match these without a problem. Chillemi said after the horse's last start victory that another good performance here today will see him take his place in the Cleveland Bay Hcp. His main danger will be the Olivia Cairns-trained Mason’s Chance who is in a purple patch of form. Olivia has the four-year-old firing just at the right time and he will be storming home late here today. He won that Battle Of The Bush Classic at Doomben by a nostril but was finishing better than any of them and had plenty in reserve so the 1300m here won’t bother him. Craiglea Deken is a track specialist and has is a three-time winner at the 1300m as well. He will also appreciate the 4kg drop in weight today. In a tight finish, I’m running with youth today and putting ‘the Missile’ on top today.
