Who will win the Big Bash League?

In the world of global professional T20 tournaments, the Big Bash League has held its own growing in stature every year and BBL07 looks set to be another thriller.

Started in 2011 and represented by eight city-based franchises, the Big Bash is one of the most attended sports leagues in the world. No wonder then that the 2017-18 edition, which will be its seventh, has got bigger and longer.

This year’s edition will feature an additional eight matches compared to last season. It gets underway with the Sydney derby on December 19 and will run until February 4, a week longer than what it was last season. So, who is going to be the top bet for this year?

BBL07 Winner - Melbourne Renegades

What is it about this Renegades side that can’t be appreciated? In Dwayne Bravo and Sunil Narine, they probably have the best combination of overseas imports. Aaron Finch and Cameron White are two of the most destructive players in BBL history. Even if Finch goes missing donning the national jersey during England ODIs, they have the experience of Brad Hodge as a replacement. The Renegades have strengthened their bowling by signing the 46-year-young Brad Hogg who is still one of the toughest to face in this format. Jon Holland and Kane Richardson make them a nightmare bowling attack for any batsmen. And then of course, they have Narine. Apart from these, the side looks set to be devoid of any mid-season drop outs for national duty which means they can grow into the tournament. On paper, the Renegades look very good and should start as favourites.

Adelaide Strikers Top Bowler - Rashid Khan

He is just 18-years-old, but the Afghanistan spinner is one with a bag of tricks and records. Rashid has 63 wickets in just 29 ODIs including the fourth-best figures (7/18 against West Indies). He also became the first bowler to take a hat-trick in the T20 Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Rashid already has a wealth of experience in global T20 leagues having turned up in Indian Premier League, Bangladesh Premier League, and the CPL. He has 50 wickets from 41 T20s in these competitions at an economy-rate of 5.90 and an average of 18.97. Australian pitches lap up quality leg-spinners and Rashid could prove to be a great signing by the Strikers.

Brisbane Heat Top Batsman - Chris Lynn

Earlier this year, the 27-year-old Lynn has signed a five-year million-dollar deal with Heat extending his stay until the 2021-22 season. That was almost a no-brainer because no ground in Australia is too big for Lynn’s destructive batting. He has scored a league-best 94 sixes in his BBL career and scores at a strike rate of 157.76. Lynn has won the ‘Big Bash League player of the tournament’ award for two years in a row. Considering that he played just five matches last year (309 runs from 174 balls, 26 sixes), that was some achievement from the hard-hitting batsman. With Lynn, though, there is always an injury around the corner and that is his only concern. However, his shoulder permitting, this is an exciting player who can make another BBL season his own.
