Fresh off a superb win against Rising Pune Supergiant, Delhi Daredevils will look to add fuel to their momentum when they take on Kings XI Punjab at Delhi on Saturday, April 15.
Can Delhi build momentum or will the great start to the 2017 IPL continue for the Kings XI?
Delhi Daredevils are a truly Indian team – in the sense that most of their players are young Indian potential stars. They started the season with a 15-run loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore and the result could have been different had someone given support to Rishabh Pant.
The close loss spurred them to action as they thrashed Pune in the next match by a whopping 97-runs. This time it was another young Indian Sanju Samson who showcased his potential. Chris Morris excelled too with his short burst of 38 off nine balls at the end.
Delhi’s bowling has a good pace-look to it thanks to the presence of Pat Cummins, Zaheer Khan and Morris. With Kagiso Rabada and Mohammad Shami waiting for their turn, you can imagine the resources at Zaheer’s disposal.
Kings XI are joint top of the table at the time of writing but do have to bounce back from a loss to Kolkata Knights Riders on Thursday.
They started with a bang by defeating Pune by six-wickets with captain Glenn Maxwell leading the charge with the bat.
They then followed it up with an eight-wicket win against Royal Challengers Bangalore. This time it was Hashim Amla and Maxwell who led them to victory. For all the doubts against his captaincy abilities, Maxwell seems to be relishing the chance.
But the unbeaten record was ended on Thursday when Kings XI suffered an eight-wicket defeat to Kolkata.
The advantage for Maxwell is the stability of fast-bowling resources in his squad. Sandeep Sharma, Mohit Sharma and Varun Aaron make one of the best troika of Indian seamers and that’s affording Maxwell the luxury of playing four overseas batsmen. That includes the dangerous Marcus Stoinis whose potential is as yet unused.
Will Delhi want to change their winning line-up? There are still concerns over the opening of Aditya Tare and he may be the one to miss out or be on his last chance to shine.
Kings XI chose a complete fast bowling line-up at Kolkata and it didn't work. They may choose to give a game to KC Cariappa at the expense of one of the Sharmas – Mohit or Ishanth.
Last year, Delhi won their home match by eight-wickets. That was after Mishra bamboozled the visitors with four wickets. Kings XI got their revenge at home by nine-runs with Stoinis leading them with an all-round effort.
The Daredevils love this venue and with the momentum from the last match, they should have a good chance of toppling Kings XI. Back the hosts at odds of $1.93 (Unibet
) to win this game. Kings XI are offered odds of $2.00 (Sportsbet
) to win.
Amla seems to have picked up form at the right time for Kings XI – back him to top the scoring chart for the visitors.
Among the bowlers, returning to his favourite venue should make Mishra a potent force. Back him to be top Delhi bowler.
