Indian Premier League Tips and Predictions - 3 best bets for IPL 2018

  • Our predictions for 2018 IPL

If you are still stuck reading about tampered balls or sandpapers, then it is time you move your attention to India. One of the biggest T20 cricket extravaganzas, the Indian Premier League (IPL), is set to start its eleventh year of excitement from Saturday, April 7.

It is no exaggeration to say that in a world of numerous T20 leagues, the IPL holds its own. With an array of world stars having already descended, India will be buzzing for the next 50 days with eight franchises vying for the glittering trophy and the glamorous prize money on offer.

What is on offer for us this season? Who are the top picks?

Top Batsman

This segment would have been completely different had David Warner and Steve Smith been available for the tournament. That, however, doesn’t take any sheen out of this year’s edition.

We still have Virat Kohli, who is probably one of the best all-round players of this generation. Over 150 IPL games for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Kohli has scored the second-most runs in IPL (4,414) at a strike rate of 130. The numbers are more staggering in the last two years where he has 15 fifty-plus scores in 25 games.

Fondly ridiculed as an ‘IPL great’ on social media, Suresh Raina will be back in his beloved Chennai Super Kings (CSK) colours this season. His 4,540 runs at a strike rate of 139 make him the top run-getter in IPL. Not just that, he has scored at least 350 runs in every season.

When it comes to consistency in T20 cricket, no one can beat Shikhar Dhawan. The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) southpaw had been very consistent for his side scoring 969 runs in 30 IPL games over the last two seasons. His overall IPL record stands at 3,550 runs in 129 games at a strike rate of 122. Another strong season for Dhawan?

Top Bowler

Not an easy pick, but one of the first names that come to mind is Bhuvneswar Kumar. He is the current ‘Purple Cap’ holder and has 48 wickets over the last two seasons in 30 matches. He is the reason why Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have been so successful. With his ability to swing up front and then bowl immaculate full-length balls at the end mean that he will always be there or thereabouts for the ‘Purple Cap’.

This year, though, he will face stiff competition from Dwayne Bravo, the ‘Champion’ CSK bowler. His ability to bowl slower balls at will and still flummox the batsmen make him a star for his side. In an IPL career spanning three teams (CSK, Mumbai Indians, and Gujarat Lions) the versatile bowler has 122 wickets from 106 games. Don’t discount him in the race to the most wickets!

Among others, Rashid Khan is a name that could be a potential challenger to the throne. The Afghanistan pocket wonder has 134 wickets in 90 matches, with 15 three-or-more-wicket displays. Throw in his economy rate of 5.85 and you have a perfect combination of a spinner who can throw any batsman’s plans into disarray. Don’t be surprised if he tops the bowling charts.
