Indian Premier League Tips and Predictions - Team-by-team guide to the 2017 IPL season

  • Guide to the 2017 Indian Premier League
  • Each team's chances assessed
Who will win the 2017 IPL?

Considering the craze Indian Premier League has, it is no wonder that fans are eagerly awaiting the 10th edition. Sridhar Bhamidi previews the chances of each team and makes his predictions for 2017.

The player auction is done and the teams are now gearing up to integrate players of various nationalities into their sides. This is what makes IPL unique – the chance to see star players of different countries mix with the local talent.

As the teams move closer to the tournament, we look ahead to each of the sides and their chances this season.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)

In David Warner, the side has an astute captain and his presence at the top makes them a dangerous side. Last year, they rode on collective performances to lift the title. Can they repeat the feat and join Chennai Super Kings as the only winner to defend the title?

Changes from auction

The Sunrisers have been very shrewd at the auction. Chris Jordan is a very reliable death-overs bowler and is added to the mix as an overseas back-up. Surprise picks Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan from Afghanistan add value and competition from the bench. Adding Pravin Tambe is another master stroke as the veteran brings loads of IPL experience with him.

Batting

‘Warner the batsman’ is as important as ‘Warner the captain’ for the Sunrisers. The Indian contingent will be led by Shikhar Dhawan and Yuvraj Singh who will have to add value with their runs.
Keep an eye on the youngster Deepak Hooda who has shown flashes of his talent last couple of seasons. This could be his breakthrough season which will surely benefit the Sunrisers. Their overseas strength is so good that Kane Williamson may continue to warm the bench.

Bowling

Mustafizur and Bhuvneshwar will once again lead with the ball while Ashish Nehra will hope to stay fit throughout the campaign. Moises Henriques and Ben Cutting did a fine job last season and should continue to do so.

Odds

Predictions

A very strong team that should make the play-offs quite easily.

Top batsman: Warner
Top bowler: Bhuvneswar Kumar
Player to watch: Hooda

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

Easily the most glamorous side in the IPL thanks to the presence of superstar Shah Rukh Khan as an owner in the dugout. This is not to demean their success in IPL where they have been twice Champions. The shrewd captaincy of Gautam Gambhir and the versatility of their bowling makes them a challenger every season. Can they do it in the tenth season?

Changes from auction

KKR went big on overseas purchases in the auction bagging Trent Boult, Chris Woakes, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Darren Bravo, and Rovman Powell together with a clutch of local Indian players.

Batting

Gambhir and Robin Uthappa have been their mainstays at the top for many seasons now. With hard-hitters Manish Pandey and Suryakumar Yadav in the mix KKR has enough batting power to throw any bowling attack into disarray. IPL veteran Yusuf Pathan will be itching to prove that he’s not past his sell-date while Chris Lynn could be the surprise package of the season for them.

Bowling

Can one look beyond Sunil Narine? The West Indies mystery spinner delivered titles for KKR but was under cloud of suspicion last season. Will the new season turn the tide back in his favor? The likes of Umesh Yadav and Piyush Chawla are veterans at KKR while Woakes and Boult should provide the variation. They will miss the services of Andre Russell – out due to doping ban.

Odds

Predictions

A consistent side but this year may not be theirs. They could struggle to go beyond the play-offs.

Top batsman: Uthappa
Top bowler: Narine
Player to watch: Lynn

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)

Another blockbuster side that will have huge following throughout the country. Having one of Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle or AB de Villiers is a luxury in T20s but RCB have all three of them! They went till the final last year only to lose out to SRH. Can Kohli reprise his stellar form of 2016? Will the superstar trio deliver the first title for RCB this year?

Changes from auction

The biggest story was the acquisition of Tymal Mills. The England seamer comes with pedigree in this format although he is as yet untested on international level. But with the limited sample size on display so far, he could be a very important player for RCB. They have also added a local Indian spinner in Pawan Negi but there’s a huge question mark on how much influence he would have.

Batting

RCB have one of the most dangerous batting line-ups in the entire IPL. With Gayle, Kohli and AB in the top order, their batting would be a handful for any team. If that is not enough, they have KL Rahul and Kedar Jadhav waiting to make their presence count. Shane Watson continues to deliver goods in this format and his all-round skills will be vital for Bangalore. Their bench strength is strong too with Travis Head and Sarfaraz Khan waiting in the wings.

Bowling

If anything, this is RCB’s weak point as the team lacks a leader. Mills and Sreenath Arvind will lead the fast-bowling while Yuzvendra Chahal will hope to continue his success from previous season. RCB do possess a solid bench strength in Adam Milne, Samuel Badree and Tabraiz Shamsi but the presence of batting superstars practically means only one overseas bowler.

Odds

Predictions

A very strong unit that should be hot favorites for the title. If they aren’t in the final four, then there is something really amiss.

Top batsman: Kohli
Top bowler: Chahal
Player to watch: Head

Mumbai Indians (MI)

One of the most successful franchises in IPL history having won two titles so far, MI start every season as one of the favorites. Notorious for their slow starts every season, MI will hope for a better start and a good finish this year. The team is settled and has some shrewd purchases from the auction. Can they rise up to the challenge?

Changes from auction

Mitchell Johnson is the biggest purchase for MI this year with the now-retired Aussie paceman joining their ranks. Latest Sri Lanka sensation Asela Gunaratne has also joined the team. Two shrewd purchases have to be that of the bowlers – K Gowtham and Karn Sharma. With MI having traditionally struggled with their second spin bowler quota, the duo could ease the worries for Rohit.

Batting

Captain Rohit Sharma is coming off an injury lay-off but will continue to be crucial to their hopes. Parthiv Patel is one of the most consistent players in IPL and should hope to build on that. Jos Buttler and Kieron Pollard add muscle to their middle order and it remains to be seen how effectively they can utilize Pollard. Pandya brothers – Hardik and Krunal, add enterprise to the side. And in Lendl Simmons, Gunaratne and Saurabh Tiwary, MI do have a strong bench.

Bowling

Harbhajan should revel being the top dog for MI while Lasith Malinga and Johnson give their attack a scary look. Add Jaspirt Bumrah, Mitchell McClenaghan, and Tim Southee to the mix and you have one perfect bowling unit.

Odds

Predictions

If they can move beyond their traditional poor starts, MI should be a tough nut for other teams. Should make the play-offs.

Top batsman: Parthiv
Top bowler: Bumrah
Player to watch: Krunal Pandya

Delhi Daredevils (DD)

A team with many young guns, DD will surely look to surprise a few this season. The absence of JP Duminy due to personal reasons is sure to hurt them but if they can find one of their young players rise up to the challenge, they could be pull off some upsets.

Changes from auction

DD went all out for pace bowlers and added Kagiso Rabada and Pat Cummins to their mix. Also coming in are Corey Anderson and Murugan Ashwin while Aditya Tare boosts up their already stocked up wicket-keeper ranks.

Batting

In a line-up dominated by Indian youngsters, Quinton de Kock should feature as the top pick for DD. The South African should look to be a leader and around him the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Karun Nair and Rishabh Pant can rally around. Angelo Mathews has been picked from the auction but there’s a question mark on his fitness. Sam Billings is a top class batsman to warm the bench while Chris Morris is a great presence in the lower order. Carlos Brathwaite is also available and could start more in the wake of Mathews’ injury woes.

Bowling

Apart from Rabada and Cummins, Amit Mishra and Mohammed Shami will be the ones to watch out for. Both have loads of IPL experience and can be crucial for their hopes. M Ashwin could be a surprise pick having already shown his utility last season. Keep an eye on the wily veteran Zaheer Khan, for whatever little he plays!

Odds

Predictions

A very raw unit that may surprise some but will be stuck to the bottom half.

Top batsman: De Kock
Top bowler: Mishra
Player to watch: Rishabh Pant

Gujarat Lions (GL)

The debutants from 2016 season surprised everyone by topping the league but fizzed out of contention soon after. Will the Lions be able to step up their play this season and take it one step ahead?

Changes from auction

Lions went after local talent in the auction adding a lot of Indian players in an effort to add balance to their squad. The only overseas player to come in was Jason Roy. Little known names like Tejas Baroka, Basil Thampi and Chirag Suri were added and it needs to be seen if they will be caught out this season.

Batting

A lot will depend on Brendon McCullum whose partnership with Roy could be a cause of concern for opponents. Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik in the middle-order lend a lot of IPL experience while Dwayne Bravo’s injury update will be keenly watched. Aaron Finch and Dwayne Smith are also available but it remains to be seen how much they will play, if all three of McCullum, Roy and Bravo are playing.

Bowling

A very weak line-up to say the least which has only Ravindra Jadeja and James Faulkner as noteworthy names. Andrew Tye is also in the squad but will face a lot of struggle to gatecrash into the playing XI. Dhawal Kulkarni and Shivil Kaushik were consistent last season but can they repeat their performances?

Odds

Predictions

Had they strengthened their team, they would have stayed in contention. It would be a huge surprise if they make it to the playoffs.

Top batsman: Raina
Top bowler: Jadeja
Player to watch: Ishan Kishan

Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS)

Definitely the cynosure of all eyes in the auction thanks to their high profile purchase of Ben Stokes. For a team that has the most successful IPL captain MS Dhoni in the ranks, RPS packs a lighter punch. Will the change of captaincy work wonders this season? Can they live up to their potential at last?

Changes from auction

Getting Stokes is the biggest talking point from auction but they have made equally competent additions in Dan Christian and Lockie Ferguson. Manoj Tiwary and Jaydev Unadkat were added to the mix to increase the Indian spine.

Batting

RPS has a very strong batting line-up although they failed to gel in their opening season. Ajinkya Rahane, Faf du Plessis and Steven Smith should be the cornerstones of their batting while Dhoni lends meat to their middle order. Usman Khawaja will be a very valuable bench warmer and the side will hope for fireworks from Stokes in the final overs.

Bowling

RPS will have to rely on an Indian-heavy bowling line-up. Ravichandran Ashwin and Adam Zampa will be a luxury for Smith but he will hope for his seamers to deliver – Ashok Dinda, Ishwar Pandey and Jaydev Unadkat. It remains to be seen if Smith will tinker with the selection of Faf or Stokes to go for an extra overseas bowler.

Odds

Predictions

Great batting line-up but a tough task for Smith to manage his bowling especially if one of Ashwin and Zampa have a bad day. They may struggle to make the play-offs.

Top batsman: Smith
Top bowler: Zampa
Player to watch: Mayank Agarwal

Kings XI Punjab

Another team that has gone for a change of captaincy, Kings XI will look to ride over their last season blues and stay in contention. With the side spending lavishly on unproven Indian seamers, there is a lingering doubt if they can manage to do that.

Changes from auction

Kings XI went for some high profile names and ended up capturing Eoin Morgan, Martin Guptill, Darren Sammy and Matt Henry – all proven T20 performers. What’s surprising was the way they went behind the little-known T Natarajan and the injury-prone Varun Aaron.

Batting

Guptill and Maxwell will share a lot of burden together with David Miller or Eoin Morgan – whoever manages to play. Hashim Amla presents a great value addition to the squad although the Indian batting contingent is very thin. Murali Vijay and Manan Vohra will look to play themselves in the midst of the galaxy of overseas stars but a weak backup may come back to haunt them.

Bowling

Marcus Stoinis and Darren Sammy may fight for one place while the rest spots should go to Indian bowlers. Axar Patel and Sandeep Sharma come with loads of IPL experience while Mohil Sharma too has a reputation to bank on. Varun Aaron and Henry provide back-up options.

Odds

Predictions

One of the weakest teams on paper and they could struggle to challenge for play-offs.

Top batsman: Raina
Top bowler: Jadeja
Player to watch: Ishan Kishan
