The home side are currently in fifth spot in the league standings with four points to show for their efforts in five games. The visitors are tied on points with the Renegades but have played one more match. They are currently second bottom in the league standings.
Both teams suffered respective defeats in the BBL before coming into this upcoming contest. While the home side were beaten by the Sydney Sixers on January 9, the visitors were defeated by defending champions Sydney Thunder.
Aaron Finch’s half century and 39 runs each from Tom Cooper and Callum Ferguson saw the Melbourne Renegades finish with 170/6 in the first 20 overs against the Sixers. It proved to be insufficient as the Sixers chased it down with three deliveries to spare. Sunil Narine and Thisara Perera were the pick of the bowlers for the Renegades with two wickets each.
In the other game, the Hurricanes had managed to get to 161/8 in the first 20 overs thanks largely to an unbeaten 69 off 54 deliveries from George Bailey. Brian McDermot and Jonathan Wells also made useful contributions.
However, the Sydney Thunder completed the chase with more than three overs to spare. Cameron Boyce claimed a couple of wickets while Stuart Broad also bowled a very good spell.
Going into this upcoming contest, both the teams need to win in order to be in touch with the top four slots. Finch and Bailey should be the key players for the two teams. The duo were overlooked for selection by Australia’s selectors as they take on Pakistan in an ODI series. Both have a lot of quality and experience and will be hungry to prove their worth.
