After a sensational win that kept alive their playoff hopes, the Royal Challengers Bangalore run into an all-round Sunrisers Hyderabad side that has already confirmed its progression as one of the top-two sides. This 51st match of the Indian Premier League will be played at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Thursday, May 17.

Both sides have played 12 matches with the Sunrisers having amassed 18 points and the Challengers picking just ten. This is a must-win for the hosts, who will also be wary of the rainy conditions in Bangalore over the past week.

Match Preview

When it looked like they were out of contention, the Royal Challengers announced their presence on the playoff stage, with a thumping ten-wicket win over the Kings XI Punjab. Restricting Punjab to 87 on a batting track, led by Umesh Yadav’s 3/23, was a master stroke. Virat Kohli (48 off 28) and Parthiv Patel (40 off 22) then blazed through the chase in 8.1 overs.

The worry, though, is that they remain a two-batsman team – with Kohli (514 runs, SR 142.38) and AB de Villiers (358 runs, SR 178.10) their lynchpins. Bowling is too erratic, although Yadav (17 wickets, ER 8.01) continues to pick up wickets even if they are coming at a higher price.

The Sunrisers saw their winning streak put to an end by Chennai Super Kings. Batting first, the Sunrisers scored 179/4 driven largely by Shikhar Dhawan’s 79 off 49 and Kane Williamson’s 51 off 39 balls. However, Chennai blitzed through the target riding on a magnificent 100 off 62 by Ambati Rayudu.

Williamson has been the shining knight for the Sunrisers through the season (544 runs, SR 134.98), with scant support from others. Sunrisers have the best bowling unit of this IPL. Led by the immaculate Rashid Khan (13 wickets, ER 7.20), they are making the ball talk – quite literally!

When the two teams met earlier in the season in Hyderabad, the Sunrisers held their nerve for a five-run win. The score of 146 all-out didn’t look a match-winning one, but the bowlers made life difficult for the batsmen, eventually pipping them to the post.

History & Statistics

The Sunrisers haven’t lost in their last five matches against the Royal Challengers – winning four and one abandoned.

At this venue, the Sunrisers have won four of their five matches against the Royal Challengers.

Sunrisers conceded the least this season at 7.54 runs per over.

In nine of their 12 matches, the Royal Challengers have managed the highest opening partnership.

Key players

His keeping may not be of the highest order, but Parthiv Patel’s hard-hitting at the top of the order is a boon. In four innings so far, he has accumulated 119 runs at a SR of 141.66. His quick starts are sure to lift the hosts.

This has been a season to forget for Manish Pandey (189 runs, SR 111.17) who has been all over the place. But, for a player of his quality, one good knock is enough to turn the tide.

Tips

Back the Royal Challengers to score the highest opening partnership at odds of 2.00

Back the Sunrisers to win the match at odds of 2.10

Back Dhawan to score over 0.5 sixes at odds of 1.80
