Autumn Carnival betting tips - 4 best long-range bets for the upcoming autumn carnival

  • The Autumn Carnival is just weeks away and we have picked out four of the best.
Is Flying Artie the best three-year-old sprinter in the land?

With the first Group 1 race of the calendar year just under a month away, there are plenty of top performers returning for the much-anticipated autumn carnival.

We have taken a look through some of the early markets on offer and picked out our top four long range bets

T.J.Smith Stakes (1200m), Randwick, April 1

Once again, the T.J.Smith Stakes (1200m) shapes as one of the races of the carnival. The champion sprinter, Chautauqua, is favourite in most markets and he is surrounded by a host of three-year-olds, while lets not forget about Spieth, who just missed out in the Darley Classic (1200m) last spring. However, we are going with the younger age bracket here and the $9 on offer for Flying Artie looks to be value. The Mick Price-trained galloper stormed all over the top of them to take out the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m), the benchmark race for that crop in the spring, despite having a limited preparation, and raced well at his only start in Sydney, a 3rd in the Golden Slipper (1200m). With big plans in store for the son of Artie Schiller, including a possible trek to Royal Ascot, expect him to be a major factor in the $2.5 million T.J.Smith.

Doncaster Mile (1600m), Randwick, April 1

Think of the major mile races at Randwick in recent times and think Chris Waller. The leading trainer has taken out the past four Doncaster's, courtesy of Winx (2016), Kermadec (2015) and Sacred Falls (2013/14) and should have a strong hand in this year's version. Three-year-olds have also been successful in the $3 million race, taking out four of the past 10 edition's of the race and one galloper that ticks both boxes is the promising, Comin' Through. The son of Fastnet Rock has had just the three career starts but took out the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) on Derby Day at Flemington, which has been a great form reference in the past and was won by Kermadec in 2014. The exciting prospect, who is a half brother to Criterion, looks set to rise through the ranks and despite being lightly raced, a Doncaster may well be within his grasp.

Doncaster Mile (1600m), Randwick, April 1

For those that like a bit of value, why not consider the David Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained, Dibayani, in the Doncaster. The much-maligned galloper has an excellent record at Randwick over the 1600m, finishing 2nd at his past three attempts over the famous mile, including once to Winx in the 2016 Chipping Norton and once to Hauaki by a whisker in the 2016 Epsom. That form is more than handy and the former import won't be overburdned with a big weight in the Handicap race. He comes out of a classy stable, who will be targeting the big race and he is one that could surprise at big odds.

Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m), Randwick, April 8

The glamour mare, Winx, has been earmarked for a four-start campaign and her Grand Final is the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on April 8. While it may be worth waiting until raceday for this one as plenty can happen from now until then, if all goes well it is doubtful that you will find any better odds for what will be a walk in the park for Australia's best horse. After braining them by eight lengths in the 2016 Cox Plate (2040m) it is hard to make a case for any galloper to get anywhere near her. Despite the risk with the early markets, take the $2!
