The Colgate Optic White Stakes (1600m) (registered as the George Main Stakes) is a major lead up to the Epsom Handicap (1600m) and is a brilliant race in its own right, always won by high-class performers.

The Randwick weight-for-age is worth $500,000 and has been won by guns such as Defier (2002), Lonhro (2003), Grand Armee (2004) and More Joyous (2010). Winx claimed the event last year and will be out to go back to back in 2017. She is currently at the odds of $1.08 in early markets with William Hill and won as a $1.09 chance last year

For fans of Winx, who are considering the odds, the race has featured a number of short priced winners and if we look through the results since the year 2000 it reveals the following trends.

10 favourites have won the event since 2000 including three at odds on and they were Winx last year as well as More Joyous (2010), Racing To Win (2006) and Grand Armee (2004). Kermadec scored as a $2.35 chance in 2015, while Lonhro won at similar odds in 2003.

No horse has lost as an odds on favourite this millennium, although another mighty mare, Sunline, was rolled as a $1.60 chance by Shogun Lodge in 1999.

Only two horses have won above $10. Road To Rock caused a boilover in 2009, winning at $41 and Adam saluted at $13 in 2000. The average winning price since the year 2000 has been $6.50

Behind Winx in this year’s market with William Hill is Happy Clapper at $15 and Foxplay at $17. Red Excitement and Tom Melbourne are both at $26 and the rest of the runners are $61 or above at this stage.

This year, there are nine contenders, which is one shy of the long-term average number of runners in the race since 2000, eight.

With the smallish fields, barriers haven’t tended to be a factor in the event with winners coming from a variety of positions.

Horses to jump from Barrier No’s 1, 4 or 5 have been the most successful with 11 wins in total in that time period. No runner has won from Barrier 2 or 7 since before the year 2000. Winx has drawn Barrier 1 on Saturday, while Red Excitement is in 4 and Ecuador 5.

Mackintosh (2) and Tom Melbourne (7) will be looking to break the duck for horses drawn in those positions this century.

The most successful age group in the George Main Stakes since 2000 have been the five-year-olds with eight winners, including three of the last four. Winx won as a five-year-old last year as did in Sacred Falls  in 2014 and Streama in 2013. Mackintosh is the only five-year-old in the race this year. Winx, who is now six, can join Shoot Out (2012), Grand Army and Adam as horses that age to win the George Main.

Winx is one of three mares in the race and the others are Heaven's Above and Foxplay. Streama and More Joyous are other members of the fairer sex to salute since 2000.
Winx' trainer, Chris Waller, has been the most successful trainer in the race since 2000 with four wins, while Gai Waterhouse and John Hawkes have registered three wins apiece in that time period.

Waller has won four of the past five editions of the race and saddles up McCreery, Mackintosh, Tom Melbourne and Foxplay, as well as his champion mare.

Waterhouse takes Ecuador into the race this year, while Hawkes is without a runner. Waterhouse tasted success in the race with More Joyous, Mr Celebrity and Grand Armee.

The most successful jockeys since 2000 are Corey Brown and Blake Shinn with two wins apiece. Shinn steers Happy Clapper this year, while Brown will not be in action.  Hugh Bowman scored his first win in the race last year aboard Winx

Finally, there has been no obvious lead up race for the George Main. Four winners have come out of the Theo Marks Stakes, while three have had their previous run in the Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) and two have come out of the Tramway Stakes (1400m). This year, Winx took out the Chelmsford Stakes in the lead up to this.

Suggested bets according to history:

It all points to Winx, but for place value, consider another one of Waller's runners. Mackintosh looks well placed.
