Pools for the big races attract far more money, and the best thing is, most of it is from inexperienced punters that are picking Quinellas, Trifectas and First 4s by horse name, colour of jockey silks, favourite numbers etc.

While some massive wins have been had using this method, it comes down to pure luck.

Racing is not a game of pure luck, and while there is some luck needed, doing the form will produce far more winners than a lucky guess will.

The form has been done, and I’m confident we can make some good money by playing the Exotics in the 2017 Melbourne Cup.

ANALYSIS

I’ve got MARMELO on top. His 3000m form in Europe is very strong and he put in an eye-catching run in the Caulfield Cup when given a fairly easy hit-out. He’s primed perfectly for this and will be hard to beat. One horse that really worries me is HUMIDOR. There is the unknown with him running two miles, but he’s bred to get the trip and his run in the Cox Plate was enormous.
Team Williams saddle up a very strong hand in 2017, which is spearheaded by reigning Cup champ ALMANDIN. He goes up in weight on last year’s run and will need to be as good as Makybe Diva to emulate her deeds in going back-to-back with 4.5kg more. I don’t think he can win with that weight but I’m not ruling him out of the placings. The two other Williams-owned runners I want to include are JOHANNES VERMEER and REKINDLING. Johannes Vermeer is a query at the trip but he had to dodge and weave so many times in the Caulfield Cup and he was still finishing strongly on the line. Rekindling won the Curragh Cup (2816m) before finishing runner-up to Order Of St George in the St Leger Trial (2816m) where he was closing rapidly over the concluding stages. He then finished two lengths from Capri in the William Hill St Leger Stakes (2921m) and was arguably the most unlucky runner. He was back in last place and started to make his move before being blocked for a run and dropping back out to last. He again tried to raise and effort and was held up before getting to the outside and working home strongly when it was all over. He’s my top pick from the Williams-owned horses.

I’m not sure BOOM TIME or SINGLE GAZE will run a strong two miles, but both impressed in the Caulfield Cup and have to be given a fighting chance.
Although RED CARDINAL was soundly beaten by Marmelo in the Prix Kergolay (3000m), you can’t underestimate his trainer Andreas Wohler or the in-form Kerrin McEvoy who guided Almandin to victory last year.

MAX DYNAMITE was runner-up in this race two years ago and his trainer Willie Mullins has intentionally targeted weaker races in the lead up so he wouldn’t be handicapped with more weight. He carried 73kg to victory last start and now drops to 54kg. The other Mullins runner that should be included is THOMAS HOBSON who finished 2nd behind Desert Skyline in the Doncaster Cup (3599m) at his most recent start.

Scotland’s first representative in the race, NAKEETA, must be respected on his strong Ebor Handicap (2787m) win, while I also give a sneaky chance to VENTURA STORM who can bounce back from a disappointing run in the Caulfield Cup.

I could make a case for a few others, but we have to keep the numbers down and try and find the right balance to give us A) a chance of winning, and B) a big enough percentage of the multiples to make it profitable.
