Melbourne Cup 2017 Odds - Almandin favourite to go back-to-back

  • Almandin the favourite for the 2017 Melbourne Cup
  • Humidor and Marmelo next in the betting
Almandin defeats Heartbreak City in the 2016 Melbourne Cup

Almandin remains favourite to claim back-to-back wins in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) following his victory in the 2016 race that stops a nation ahead of Tuesday's Flemington showpiece.

Former German galloper Almandin carried the colours of owner Lloyd Williams to victory at Flemington in the 2016 Melbourne Cup when holding off Heartbreak City in a thrilling finish to win at odds of $11.

Almandin was installed as the $17 outright favourite for the 2017 Melbourne Cup, but he is now $8.50 and heads the betting for the race with bookmaker TopBetta.

The Hughie Morrison-trained British galloper Marmelo is on the second line at odds of just $9.00 following his fast-finishing sixth in the Caulfield Cup, while Darren Weir's Humidor is the same price after his runner-up finish behind Winx in the Cox Plate.

Aidan O'Brien's Johannes Vermeer, who has finished runner-up in the Caulfield Stakes and third in the Caulfield Cup in his two starts in Australia, is $10 to take out the Melbourne Cup.

Fellow internationals Rekindling ($12), Wall Of Fire ($14), Max Dynamite ($15), Red Cardinal ($16) and Thomas Hobson ($16) are next in the betting.

Boom Time, who caused a $34 upset when winning the Caulfield Cup, is now $31 to complete Cups double, while runner-up Single Gaze is also available to back at $34.

Amelie's Star ($17) and Big Duke ($21) will also be among the challengers for 2015 winning trainer Weir, while Hartnell and overseas visitor Nakeeta are both $26.
