Punter lands $1 million after Rekindling wins the Melbourne Cup

Rekindling's victory in the 2017 Melbourne Cup was life changing for one punter after they landed $1 million.

Don Clemente, who lives in Melbourne, won a free bet on the eventual Cup winner at odds of 1,000,000/1 as part of a competition run by TAB.

Any TAB customer placing a bet on a race on Melbourne Cup Day went into a draw to place their free bet on a runner in the Cup at the more than generous odds of $1 million.

And after having a $5 each-way bet on Land of Plenty in race three - a race in which the horse finished runner-up, Clemente was drawn at random to receive the chance to win a million dollars.

His selection of Rekindling, a $15 chance, got up late to defeat Johannes Vermeer and leave the 45-year-old Clemente in a state of shock at what had just transpired.

"I was laying on the couch about to have a few bets when I got the call that I won the draw," Clemente was quoted as saying by The Age. "I was actually home alone so I had to call a few mates who rushed over to watch with me.

"I was just numb. It's a surreal feeling and I'm still in shock. I chose Rekindling because I liked its form overseas and its draw, but I never could have imagined this."
