Lloyd Williams to steer clear of Cup start – Focus on WFA races in the Spring

Lloyd Williams

Reputable horse owner Lloyd Williams is unlikely to start his 2017 quinella pairing of Rekindling and Johannes Vermeer in this year’s Melbourne Cup.

AAP reports the six-time Cup winning owner is more likely to target some of the Spring Carnival’s elite weight-for-age races so as to avoid the handicapper’s wrath.

Williams told RSN927 that both horses would more than likely miss a Cup start and target other feature races.

"Very unlikely that you'll see them in the Cup" Williams said.
"We'll see them probably in a weight-for-age race, I would have said.
"They'll be up too far in the weights for handicap racing.
"They'll run in some of the weight-for-age races hopefully."

Williams remained in the racing headlines over the weekend with another of his stable runners when three-year-old Latrobe won the Group One Irish Derby (2400m) at The Curragh.

Plans for a Melbourne Cup start for the son of Camelot may also be avoided due to the weight he may be given however according to trainer Joseph O’Brien no concrete decision has been made at this stage.

“Today was Plan A and we’ll let the dust settle before deciding where to go next,” Racing Post reported O’Brien as saying post-race.
“I’ll talk to Lloyd and Nick and see what they want to do.”

Latrobe is currently a $34 chance with Sportsbet for the Melbourne Cup, in from $51 which was on offer prior to his Derby victory.

Cup favouritism also moved over the weekend with the Roger Charlton-trained Withhold firming into $16 with Sportsbet.

The five-year-old son of Champs Elysees came under notice after winning the Northumberland Plate (3270m) at Newcastle on Sunday morning.
