Roughies Tips - 3 roughies to back at Randwick and Caulfield on Saturday April 22

  • Win big with these roughies at Randwick and Caulfield as Group 1 racing concludes in Sydney for the autumn
Prussian Vixen is at good each-way odds on Saturday at Caulfield

Racing is at Randwick on Saturday April 22 and it is take-two for the Sydney Cup (3200m), while at Caulfield, there is a quality nine-race programme.

We have looked through the fields at both venues and picked out the best three roughies to back for the day, each-way.

Randwick Race 8 - 3:35PM SCHWEPPES SYDNEY CUP (3200 METRES)

The stayers line up in the Sydney Cup and one contender that has been good to us in the past and is worth sticking with is the Godolphin-trained Tally. The four-year-old has never raced over the 3200m journey but improves every time he steps up in trip and comes off a solid win in the Mornington Cup (2400m). At the end of his last campaign he wasn't far away from Oceanographer in the Lexus Stakes (2500m), running 3rd to that galloper and he has also been close up in some of the weight-for-age races in Melbourne earlier this autumn. One of a number of runners that was pulled up in the abandoned cup a fortnight ago, Tally has won on Good and Soft tracks and should appreciate the likely solid tempo up front. He represents good value at the $12.

Caulfield Race 7 - 3:55PM Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria Bel Esprit Stakes (1100 METRES)

One of the races of the day at Caulfield is the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m), which sees the likes of Rocket Tommy and Petite Filous in action as well as the Oakleigh Plate (1100m) runner up, Faatinah. Lower down in the market is the $26 shot, Legless Veuve, and the Stuart Webb-trained filly looks to be a sneaky chance. The three-year-old has run some big races at Caulfield, taking out the Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) last year as well as the Manfred Stakes (1200m) earlier this campaign, finishing ahead of Into Orbit and Hey Doc. She was sent to the Australian Guineas (1600m) and struggled to run out the mile, finishing last, but has since had a freshen up, and should be suited back in trip. The daughter of Pins has drawn nicely in Barrier 4 and carries the minimum weight of 54kg. She should run a very solid race.

Race 8 - 4:35PM Newmarket Grand West VOBIS Gold Sprint (1200 METRES)

Race 8 at Caulfield is for the VOBIS gallopers and is worth $250,000. Prussian Vixen lines up at the each-way quote and the frontrunner can upstage some of her favoured rivals, particularly if she is left alone in front. The four-year-old defeated Silent Sedition at the venue in the Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) as recently as two starts ago and was just run down late by Bassett in the Hareeba Stakes (1200m). She has won two from three at the track and will spear to the front from the wide gate where she may be very hard to run down.
