A sensational two-day racing fixture called The Championships will take place in Sydney in the autumn in 2014.
Australian racing authorities announced that a plan for a Breeders’ Cup-style fixture had been confirmed and the meeting will take place on Saturday 12 April and Saturday 19 April in 2014.
The showpiece will include ten races with purses worth a combined $16.8 million and it will be held at Royal Randwick Racecourse in suburban Sydney.
Eight of the races set to take place over the course of the two days are already established contests with Group One status and they will receive calendar changes and purse boosts in light of the announcement.
The Star Doncaster Mile will offer prize money of $2.8 million and it will become the richest mile race in the world. Elsewhere, the purse for the Darley TJ Smith Stakes has been raised to about $2.3 million, making it the richest sprint stakes in the world, while Queen Elizabeth Stakes will offer a purse of $3.7 million.
The Championships are a product of the partnership between Australian Turf Club, which operates Royal Randwick, and Racing New South Wales. According to reports, the New South Wales government also contributed $10million to the event.
The meeting will also be music to the ears of Australia’s leading bookmakers and the likes of Ladbrokes Australia
will be looking forward to another tantalising race fixture Down Under.
