NHL Tips

Edmonton Oilers @ Winnipeg Jets

The Edmonton Oilers will complete a four-game road trip on Tuesday night. The Oilers will be in Manitoba to take on the Winnipeg Jets. The game is an important one for Edmonton as they will look to follow up on a strong outing from their last game in hopes of returning home with a .500 record.

The game looks like a big candidate for the OVER side of betting. Winnipeg's offense has only been average to start the season. However, looking at the situation with Edmonton, punters should still be betting on goals to be scored in this game.

Cam Talbot for the Oilers has been shaky in net to start the season. That could give Winnipeg's offense a jolt as the Jets might get a couple easy ones in this game. Meanwhile, Edmonton has Connor McDavid, the betting favorite to win the scoring title by preseason odds. McDavid has five points in three games so far this season and that's a scoring rate that he is likely to maintain.

Edmonton sucking on defense but having an offensive juggernaut in McDavid makes it look like a lot of scoring could take place on Tuesday night in North America. Take OVER 6.5 goals at $2.54 with Unibet.

The Buffalo Sabres are a club that certainly fit the bill for the 2018/19 NHL season. They are last-favorites in the NHL's Atlantic Division but they might just have some prejudice against them.

That prejudice has a lot to do with the fact that the Sabres didn't have a good season in 2017/18 by any measure. They finished bottom in the Atlantic Division with a 25-45-12 record, easily missing the playoffs. There wasn't a lot of mitigating circumstances when it came to excuse-making for Buffalo: they just choked in a season where some saw them competing for a playoff spot. It certainly did not help that Jack Eichel missed 15 games but that wasn't a large enough volume to explain away a terrible season.

Last season, part of the problem was that the Sabres melted down defensively. They had Robin Lehner and Chad Johnson between the pipes in almost all games, the latter of which is often cited as the worst NHL goaltender that sees consistent ice time. A change in net may bring a change in fortunes and Buffalo made the right move in an offseason transaction.

Back on July 1st, the Sabres signed Carton Hutton to a three-year deal. That should easily be an upgrade over either Lehner or Johnson and you could project a lot more wins to Buffalo's total this season in kind.

Hutton isn't a big name player and he has never appeared in more than 40 games at the NHL level. But in a 32-game season in 2018/19 he posted the best save percentage and the best goals-against average -- league wide. There are goalies that had to haul bigger work loads for their clubs but if Hutton can bring to the table for the Sabres what he brought to the table last year for the Blues then don't be surprised if the Sabres contend in the Atlantic.

With Jack Eichel still getting stronger and improving each year, the Sabres have a center man that might be able to orchestrate an offense better than he has in the past. Given that Eichel was never weak to begin with, there's reason to believe that the Sabres will be better offensively this upcoming year too.

Of course, last season will loom large but you have to throw out a 25-win season when the goaltender changes for the better. Sportsbet have Buffalo priced long at $34.00 in the Atlantic Division and that's worth a dabble with OVER/UNDER totals for team wins on the horizon.
