NHL Tips

There's no harm in keeping an eye on NHL antepost ahead of the new season. A lot of teams are making moves and the betting sportsbooks don't necessarily update their odds in a timely manner.

One team that is a little long for what they offer is the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers are in a great situation because of one thing: money. Edmonton recently signed generational talent Connor McDavid to a lengthy deal. As far as NHL standards go, McDavid's contract was expensive, but here's the thing. In 2017/18 he'll still be playing under his old NHL-entry contract. That means that the Oilers are getting McDavid, already the league MVP at the age of 20, at less than $1M for next season. The importance is that they have the best player that hockey has seen since Wayne Gretzky at a super-budget price for next year. That leaves them plenty of wriggle room to sign on some talent and don't think for a second that Edmonton's GM, Peter Chiarelli, won't do it.

He's been active in free agency recently, having made a couple of cunning low-budget signings. The Oilers got Yohanna Auvitu, a player that doesn't look great at first but sure does when you look at the deeper stats. Auvitu is signed for less than a million while veteran Jussi Jokinen is signed at a low price too. If the Oilers can get Leon Draisaitl then they'll have the top lines in place and a strong supporting cast. If they don't get Draisaitl, who is a restricted free agent, then there's always the question of what Edmonton will end up getting. The pressure is on in the hockey-crazed city and you have to know that Chiarelli will respond.

For betting odds, the Oilers can win the Western Conference. They might end up being front-to-back NHL leaders in 2017/18, meaning that they could jump out at the start and stay in front all year. Don't be surprised if the odds on Edmonton right now in antepost are as long as they get. The smart thing to do with this team is to get something on them before they spend the cap space they have. After they do it, they promise to shorten.

The Montreal Canadiens are currently the favourites to win the Atlantic Division with Ladbrokes, priced very short at $1.40. At this point there aren't a lot of sportsbooks with betting lines open on divisional markets. Perhaps the Habs will have longer lines available as more markets open as $1.40 on a six-month competition looks uninteresting.

But a big reason that the Habs are favourites, of course, is that the Canadiens will have Carey Price in net and Shea Weber on defense. Furthermore, the Habs are also defending divisional champs and such a status always seem to draw some attention. That said, Montreal only won their division by 5 points last season. At $1.40 you would want a team that projects to win by double digits and you can't really make that projection with the Canadiens.

Taking a look at Montreal, you do have to worry about an injury to Carey Price. He missed the bulk of 2015/16 and the Habs went from the penthouse to the outhouse in kind. With big salaries for Price and Weber, this is a team that could feel the burn of injury worse than most. The Habs also look like they will have some scoring problems again next season.

The team to oppose the Habs with is the Tampa Bay Lightning. They have Peter Budaj and Andrei Vasilevski as a potentially strong tandem in net. The Lightning did well to keep Ondrej Palat, signing him to a five-year deal at the age of 26. But the key to Tampa Bay's success may rest with Steven Stamkos.

He suffered injuries last season and appeared in only 17 games. What's important to note with TB is that this is a team that bubbled one point out of the playoffs, despite missing their best skater for more than 75% of the season. Stamkos is still in his mid-20s and he has proven point-per-game ability as that is his career average. If he stays healthy, the Lightning will look a lot different next season than they did last season.

The Habs have TB beat on defense, but that only goes so far. Furthermore, Budaj and Vasilevski might actually surprise the NHL next season. The former was good in Los Angeles last year and might put up really good numbers in relief duties. The Lightning are priced at $6.50 to win the division, a more reasonable betting line to take for a long-term market.
