NHL Tips

Toronto Maple Leafs @ Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals got wrecked in their last game out as they fell 8-2 to the Philadelphia Flyers. That will naturally have some wondering if there's trouble with Washington, but there's probably not a big reason to be overly concerned. The Caps were at the back end of a back-to-back situation and a lot of teams get burned in that circumstance. A lot of the time, after a team loses by a big spread, they do bounce back with a competitive game afterwards.

The Capitals will be hosting a Toronto team that has not actually played a strong team on the road as of yet. Toronto does have a win over Chicago, but the Leafs hosted that game. Furthermore, Toronto has a win over Montreal in Montreal, but the Habs' caliber isn't all that clear yet. Toronto in Washington could be where we start to see the hot-start Leafs regress. The Leafs seem very unlikely to light up a well-rested Braden Holtby, a goalie with a .923 save percentage thus far and a 3-1-0 record.

Playing at home, the Caps certainly aren't priced too short to be picked. They come in at $1.68 with Unibet to win straight-up, odds that NHL punters will want to be on top of.

Tampa Bay Lightning @ New Jersey Devils

The Tampa Bay Lightning will face the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday in North America. Given the expectations with the two teams this season, many might be inclined to back the Lightning. They have, after all, won four straight games and they sit atop the Atlantic Division at this early stage in the season. After an injury-plagued year last year perhaps the Lightning have it together for 2017/18.

But it is hard to look further than the New Jersey Devils in this game, because of the long odds that are available on them. They are priced at $2.75 for a regulation-time win with Unibet. In five games this season they have in fact tallied four regulation-time wins. That includes two wins on the road against pretty good teams in both Toronto and the New York Rangers. While punters could list similar reasons to back the Lightning, this game simply appears to be a matter of going with the longer odds. The Lightning only come in at $2.35 to win in regulation (overtime, regardless of winner, would be a losing bet) and the Devils are much longer.

With New Jersey playing at home and TB at the tail-end of a back-to-back, the advantage appears to be with the Devils. They have a lot of guys contributing to scoring and their hot start may not be fluky. Take NJ at $2.75 in regulation time to win.

The Detroit Red Wings are an interesting team when one looks at early-season NHL futures odds. They play in the Atlantic Division and they are currently the last favourites with Ladbrokes or William Hill at $21.00. That they've opened the season 3-1-0 won't and shouldn't change many people's minds about them simply because of the short-termed trend. However a valid reason to take a poke on Detroit is simply that they've figured out that they should be playing Jimmy Howard in net.

The Red Wings were a bit of an anomaly last year in that they did well on the 2nd half of back-to-back situations. A plausible reason for that is that Jimmy Howard saw increased action in the 2nd game of such situations relative to the first game. With a .927 save percentage and a 2.10 goals-against average in 2016/17, Howard probably should have had more starts that Petr Mrazek (.901/3.04).

The point to note is that this season thus far Howard has been the one getting the starts and he has a .955 save percentage thus far. He won't keep that up long term, but if he settles into a .927 save percentage this season then Detroit will be a different team than they were last year. A lot of other things need to fall into place for the Red Wings to win the Atlantic Division. However odds of $21.00 sure account for a lot. They should be taken with either William Hill or Ladbrokes.

Sergei Bobrovsky won the Vezina Trophy last season in the NHL, the award given to the best goaltender over the course of the regular season. He is back to his old tricks it seems as the Russian goaltender has enjoyed strong form to start the season. Friday night was a case in point as he allowed just one goal to the New York Rangers en route to posting a 3-1 win.

For some reason Bobrovsky is considered 5th favourite for the Vezina this season again, priced at $12.00 with Unibet. Those are long odds for the reigning holder of the title, especially with the hot start that he is off to. With some goaltenders a hot start wouldn't mean much, but it's too obvious that Columbus' backstop is capable of keeping up his efforts over the long term. Perhaps he is just not well backed because of his nationality: partisan Canadian and American fans might not put big bets on the Russian.

Whatever the reason, there appears to be betting value with taking Bobrovsky for the repeat Vezina, one that would be his third overall. He has a good team in front of him, he's still just 29 years old, and Unibet is almost daring you to place the bet with their long odds of $12.00 under-rating his chances.
