Match Preview

It’s been a miserable season for the Bulldogs as they attempt to deal with the mess left behind by Des Hasler and the previous board - and things went from bad to worse last week.

Buzzing after their best attacking performance of the season the previous week when they put 36 points on the Knights, Canterbury were brilliant for 74 minutes against the Raiders at Belmore - and had a 14-point lead to show for it with six minutes to go.

But somehow, someway, the Bulldogs found a new way to lose a game of rugby league in 2018 as the Raiders produced three tries in the final six minutes to come away with a 32-18 victory.

It was a heartbreaking loss in an already-nightmare season for Canterbury, but at least they can take solace in the fact they’ve enjoyed their best games in attack over the last two weeks.

Ironically, the Bulldogs also gave up a last-minute lead against the Rabbitohs in their last meeting on Good Friday earlier this season.

In fact, you can trace that match back as a turning point for the Rabbitohs, who were struggling early but have now put together an eight-match winning streak and scored at least 20 points in their last 11 games to surge to the top of the ladder on points differential from the Dragons.

Also ranked first in attack so far this season, the Rabbitohs will be determined not to slip up against the Bulldogs, with the Dragons, Storm and Panthers all waiting in line to grab top spot should someone falter this weekend.

With Canterbury playing better with a younger and enthusiastic side, they should be able to once again hang with Souths for the bulk of the contest. But the Rabbitohs have far more firepower, and when push comes to shove, there’s a reason one team is first and the other is 15th. Souths to win a solid contest.
