South Sydney are flying high at the moment after beating the competition leaders while the Cowboys fell off the perch again with another loss. Who will come out the hungriest here?

Cowboys vs Rabbitohs kicks off at 5.30pm AEST at 1300 Smiles Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports in Australia.

Match Preview

After a promising return to the winner’s circle against the Panthers in Round 9, the Cowboys fell back to the ground last week recording yet another loss, this time against the Wests Tigers. They now sit 14th on the ladder and another loss here would surely see their 2018 season done and dusted.

The Rabbitohs however are coming off back-to-back victories against the Knights and the Dragons and have put 60 points on the board from both games which is a clear indication their attack across the park is firing on all cylinders.

After 10 rounds and a bag of excuses that must be just about empty, Cowboys coach Paul Green will no doubt make it clear to his team that the axe will be sharpened and ready for use unless a huge improvement is made this week.

At present, they look like a side lacking confidence and enthusiasm but they are all professional enough to know that it has to all come about this week. Origin jerseys and indeed club jumpers will be on the line on Saturday night as they try to find the same form that got them to last year’s grand final.

The Rabbitohs will take the field full of confidence as new coach Anthony Seibold has them playing with more depth and flair right across the park. They looked very entertaining in their win over the Dragons last week and with players like hooker Damian Cook, halfback Adam Reynolds and a backline highlighted by in-form players Cody Walker and Greg Inglis, it’s hard to see them falling from grace this week.

With the announcement of Cameron Smith’s retirement from representative football, the battle around the ruck has suddenly become a drawcard here. While Damien Cook will be out to impress Blues coach Brad Fittler he is ready for an Origin debut, Cowboys hooker Jake Granville has suddenly come into calculations to replace Smith as the Maroons number nine.

But it’s out wide where the Rabbitohs can get the better of the home side here. The Cowboys outside backs have been below par so far this season and with Rabbitohs captain Greg Inglis out there along with fullback Alex Johnston and Dane Gagai lurking out wide, the Cowboys backs will have their hands full holding out such a strong and enthusiastic line up.

With just an even share of possession, if they can finish the game with a high completion rate, it certainly looks like it could be a winning night for the visiting South Sydney side.
