Can the Cowboys go one step further in 2018?

It promises to be another thrilling season of NRL action when the 2018 campaign gets underway on Thursday March 8 - keep reading below as we come up with our three best bets for the new season!

Cowboys to secure 2018 NRL premiership

The popular picks for the 2018 NRL premiership are obviously the Sydney Roosters and Melbourne Storm, but are they worth their value? All of the money coming in for the $5.00 (with CrownBet) favourites the Roosters is on the back of Cooper Cronk joining the club, but can he land the Tri-colours a premiership? I’m not so sure - Mitchell Pearce, for all his sins, was just starting to come into his own in the No. 7 jersey, and his departure hasn’t sat well with a lot of fans - and probably players. If Cronk doesn’t start the season with a bang, the fans might turn on him. The Roosters still have a lot of work to do, while no team has captured back-to-back premierships since Brisbane in the early 90s - which means we can effectively rule out Melbourne Storm.

My four teams to keep an eye on in 2018 are the North Queensland Cowboys, Parramatta Eels, Canterbury Bulldogs and Newcastle Knights. I think all four will make the top eight - the latter two after nightmare 2017 campaigns, while the Cowboys and Eels could easily find themselves battling it out in the latter stages of the finals series. Future Immortal Johnathan Thurston is playing his last ever season for the Cowboys, and if he remains injury-free, he can guide them to another premiership. The Cowboys almost won the premiership without him in 2017 - just think what they can do with Thurston as he teams up with Jason Taumalolo and co? Parramatta, with Jarryd Hayne returning, are genuine dark horses, and worth a punt at $13 if you fancy them, but my tip for the 2018 NRL premiership is the Cowboys.

Bulldogs to make the eight

Canterbury Bulldogs endured a tumultuous 2017 season, but 2018 promises to be a whole lot different as club legend Dean Pay returns as coach in place of Des Hasler. Many fans are of the belief Hasler had run the club into the ground with his non-existent attacking structure and stubborn nature, with the Bulldogs barely packing a bite as they crashed to a poor 11th-placed finish.

Pay is a throwback to the traditional ‘Dogs of War’ and knows what the club is about - and if the Dogs can get off to a good start and start playing an entertaining brand of football again, then watch out. Kieran Foran, if he remains in good shape off the field, is exactly the type of playmaker Canterbury have been crying out for, and with just three teams below them in the top eight market with Sportsbet (Warriors, Titans, Tigers), the Dogs are certainly value for money at $3.00 to make the finals.

Vunivalu to go back-to-back

When was the last time we score a try scorer as prolific as Suliasi Vunivalu? Have we ever? The Fijian flyer set the record for most tries in a debut season by bagging himself 22 in 2016, eclipsing the 2007 record of Israel Folau, while he more than matched that effort in 2017 as the Melbourne Storm surged to premiership glory.

Vunivalu comes into the 2018 season with 46 tries from 47 games - a truly extraordinary strike rate. He also scored nine tries in just six games for Fiji in the recent World Cup. If he stays injury-free, there’s no doubt Vunivalu will be up there challenging for the most tries again in 2018 - and as the $7.00 favourite with Ladbrokes, I’m happy to back him in.
