Will Australia win or draw a game at the 2018 World Cup?

  • Australia face France in their World Cup opener
  • Peru and Denmark are the others teams in Group C
Will the Socceroos win or draw?

Many are discounting the Socceroos' chances of progressing from the group stage at this year’s World Cup. But, can they pick up points against any of their Group C opponents? There’s plenty to suggest they can, making this sign-up promotion from Palmerbet an absolute beauty!

Australia are now well-versed in playing the world’s biggest teams on the big stage. In the 2006 World Cup, the Socceroos nabbed a win over Japan and a draw with Croatia to progress to the Round of 16, while in 2010, they picked up a point courtesy of a draw against exciting African outfit, Ghana.

Form-wise, the Socceroos have been impressive: they’ve lost just one of their last nine internationals, including World qualifying tie success against Syria and Honduras, and warm-up victories over Czech Republic (4-0) and Hungary (2-1) earlier this month.

Australia are $12 outsiders in this weekend’s opener against trophy contenders France ($6 for a draw). Those odds come in dramatically for their subsequent clashes against Peru and Denmark, however, and the group underdogs will be eyeing off their June 26 showdown with Peru as their best chance for a positive result.

There’s no questioning the quality of the Peruvian outfit and the dangers they present, but World Cup experience counts for plenty – and they are carrying the hopes of a nation in the biggest tournament in world sport for the first time since 1982.

Peru are unbeaten in their last 16 matches but five of those were draws – including their most recent hit-out against Sweden; they were also held scoreless by lowly New Zealand during qualifying. Currently $3.60 to win their group-closing clash with Peru, the Socceroos appear strong value based on the recent form of both sides.

Don’t discount the value in the Socceroos pulling off a win ($5.50) or draw ($3.60) in their June 21 match-up with the Danes either, who Australia beat in a 2010 friendly. Denmark lost to Sweden and Jordan earlier this year and recorded scoreless draws against Chile and Sweden more recently.

Bolstered by experience and unburdened by a lack of expectation, the Socceroos are a tempting proposition at $2.05 to win a game and value-plus with Palmerbet to at least emerge with a draw to show for their underdog efforts.
