World Cup Group A Preview and Predictions - Essential guide to Group A

Gary Emmerson 4 Jun 2018
  • Russia headline Group A as hosts
  • Uruguay expected to join them in qualifying
  • Egypt and Saudi Arabia the other nations in the group
Russia midfielder Roman Zobnin

Hosts Russia headline Group A and will kick off the tournament when they take on Saudi Arabia, but who will emerge from the group stages and secure their place in the round of 16?

Russia have been given a relatively favourable draw and will be expected to qualify for the knockout stages in the tournament they are hosting.

Bookmakers expect Uruguay - runners-up in the South American qualification behind Brazil - to be the team battling with Russia for top spot in the group.

Egypt, who are the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations runners-up and have Mo Salah among the ranks, qualified as winners from Group E in African qualification and could be the surprise package in the group as they look to progress to the knockout stages for the first time.

Asian Group B runners-up Saudi Arabia have been beyond the group stages having reached the Round of 16 in 1994, but are not given much hope of qualifying this time around

Group A Odds

Winner: Uruguay $1.80, Russia $2.75, Egypt $5.50, Saudi Arabia $26.00

To Qualify: Uruguay $1.16, Russia $1.33, Egypt $2.25, Saudi Arabia $8.00
