The Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) takes place at the Gold Coast Racecourse annually in January and is fast becoming one of the country’s most revered sprint races for two-year-olds.
The set-weights race takes place on Magic Millions Day and is one of eight races on the day for horses purchased at the Magic Millions Yearling Sales on the Gold Coast.
Other races on the day include the MM 3YO Guineas (1400m), MM Cup (1400m), MM Sprint (1000m), MM Stayers Cup (1800m), MM Fillies and Mares Handicap (1300m), MM Maiden Plate (1200m) and the MM Class 6 Plate (1200m).
The Magic Millions Yearling Sales was introduced in 1986 and Snippets won the inaugural Magic Millions 2YO Classic the following year.
With $2 million in prizemoney the Magic Millions 2YO Classic attracts the country’s best juvenile sprinters that have been purchase through the MM yearling Sales.
In the early days two races were run every year with one set aside specifically for fillies, until in 1991 this was changed when Bold Promise won both events.
In 1992 there were still two events but one over 1200m and the other over 1400m; once again there was a dual winner with Clan O’Sullivan claiming both races.
In 1993 then the Magic Millions took on its current race format where a series of top champions have been produced.
There is no definitive lead-up race to the MM 2YO Classic but the last three winners of the race have competed in the B J McLachlan Stakes (1200m), Sparkling Handicap (1000m) and the Rosehill Event Centre Handicap (1100m) respectively.
Some of Australia’s most talented sprinters have won the premiere set-weights two-year-old event with the most recent being Real Surreal (2013).
Winners of the MM 2YO Classic have generally gone on to compete in feature sprint races such as the Blue Diamond (1200m) and Golden Slipper (1200m) and often return the following year to compete in the MM 3YO Guineas (1400m).
Other notable winners of the MM 2YO Classic include: General Nediym (1997), Testa Rossa (1999), Exellerator (2001), Lovely Jubly (2002), Regimental Gal (2003), Dance Hero (2004), Bradbury’s Luck (2005) and Phelan Ready (2009).
