One of four Group 1 races staged on Victoria Derby Day at Flemington on the opening day of the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival on the last Saturday in October or first in November, the Coolmore Stud Stakes sees the very best three-year-olds go head-to-head.

Run over 1200m or the "straight six" at Flemington, some elite three-year-old sprinters carry set weights chasing a total prize fund of $500,000.

The race forms part of a stellar day at Flemington with all races Group standard including the Group 1 Victoria DerbyMackinnon Stakes and the Myer Classic, although had previously taken place in September previously when known as the Ascot Vale Stakes. It moved to Victoria Derby Day in 2006, when also becoming a Group 1 contest, and took on its current name a year later.

Some of the stars of the Coolmore Stud Stakes will arrive via the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas, staged earlier during the Melbourne Spring Carnival over the longer trip of 1600m, while others may have taken in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1200m), which takes place at Rosehill in October during the Sydney Spring Carnival, the Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley or the Caulfield Sprint (1100m).

The roll of honour of the races includes some fine sprinters including the brilliant Vain, who won in 1969, Surround (1976), Manikato (1978), Rose of Kingston (1981), Rancher (1982), Zeditave (1987), Maizcay (1995), Spargo (1999), Alinghi (2004), Gold Edition (2006), Weekend Hussler (2007), Star Witness (2010) and Sepoy, who made it six wins from as many starts when winning in 2011.

Flemington is a spacious track with one of the longest straights in Australia at 450m which gives all horses an equal chance with luck in running.

Flemington also has a 1200 metre straight track for racing which is commonly referred to as "The Straight Six" course.

The run to first turn in the Melbourne Cup is 888m, ensuring that no horse has their chances hampered during the opening half-a-mile.

Steeped in tradition and home of Australia’s most iconic race, the Melbourne Cup, Flemington is arguably Australia’s most famous racecourse.

Crowds in excess of 100,000 people are a common occurrence during Flemington’s biggest race days where the Victorian Racing Club provides an entertaining environment for all.

The racecourse was first built in the 1850s and made its way onto the National Heritage List in 2006.

Flemington was originally named the Melbourne Racecourse on Crown Land after the Governor of New South Wales in 1848 formally declared 352 acres as a public racecourse and set up a six-member trust to oversee the racecourse.

The Victoria Racing Club Act passed by the government in 1871, made the club the trustees of the racecourse.

The Gold Rush era brought great wealth to Melbourne and Flemington soon grew in popularity, attracting vibrant crowds by the thousands.

Races were initially run in autumn, however, in 1854 the Victoria Turf Club decided to hold spring meetings due to favourable weather conditions - this eventually led to the hosting of the Melbourne Cup.
