THE BMW HISTORY & GUIDE

The Group 1 The BMW Stakes (2400m) takes place at annually at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in April and is one of Australia’s premium middle-distance/staying races.

With $2.25 million in prizemoney The BMW Stakes attracts the country’s best middle-distance and staying types throughout the autumn. It is an open weight-for-age race and is the ninth Group 1 race of the Sydney Autumn Carnival.

The race is one of three Group 1 races on the day with the richest two-year-old race in the world, the Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m), being the feature race on the card.

Other races to compliment the day are the Group 1 Storm Queen Stakes (2000m), Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m), Group 3 Star Kingdom Stakes (1200m), Group 3 T L Baillieu Handicap (1400m) and the Group 3 Neville Selwood Stakes (2000m).

The most reliable guide to The BMW Stakes is the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) held two weeks earlier at the same track. Many BMW Stakes winners have come through the Ranvet Stakes, with the most recent being Fiveandahalfstar in 2013.

Some of Australia’s greatest horses have won The BMW Stakes with the most notable being three-time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva.

Other notable winners of The BMW Stakes include: Hyperno (1978), Kingston Town (1980), Bonecrusher (1986), Octagonal (1996-97), Might And Power (1998), Tie The Knot (1999-2000), Ethereal (2002), and Manighar (2012).
