Hawthorn vs Brisbane Preview
Hawthorn were blown out of the blocks early in their Round 11 game against a red-hot Port Adelaide, conceding 16 first half goals before eventually losing that match by 55 points. At one stage the Hawks trailed by as much as 96 before rallying with eight of the last 10 goals of the match.
That momentum might hold them in good stead against a Brisbane side that had the bye last weekend. The Lions missed out against the Adelaide Crows prior to the break, losing the Round 11 match-up by 17 points.
However, Chris Fagan’s side can be excused for that defeat, given they won their six games prior. The Lions sit in 4th position on the ladder with eight wins from their 11 matches, while Hawthorn have won three of 11 and are in 16th position.
Brisbane have plenty of firepower up forward and rank 3rd for goals scored this season, while Hawthorn are 16th. Charlie Cameron is one player the Hawks will have to contain and kicked four against Adelaide to take his tally to 32 for the season, while Joe Daniher has 30. Those two sit in the top eight for goals scored.
At the other end of the ground, Mitchell Lewis and Luke Breust will be the targets for the Hawks, who will be looking for big games from Will Day and Conor Nash in the middle of the ground in a bid to restrict Lachie Neale, Josh Dunkley and Dayne Zorko.
This game might be a bit closer than the betting suggests, particularly if Hawthorn can start better this time around. The two sides have rarely played each other at the MCG and Hawthorn have won their past four against the Lions at the venue, including a Round 1 encounter at the MCG in 2020.
