Below is our previous head to head preview and predictions.

Hawthorn vs Brisbane Lions Tips

Brisbane were the better performed of the two sides in 2019, qualifying in 2nd position before bowing out of the finals in straight sets. Hawthorn came home with some winning form but it was too little too late as they had to settle for 9th position, one win out of the finals action.

In the recent Marsh Community Series, Brisbane lost their first match to Port Adelaide but rebounded strongly by defeating Carlton by 45 points. Hawthorn lost both outings and in the most recent of those, they only registered six goals in their 32 point loss to Melbourne.

While we can almost ignore the Marsh form based on previous years, that stat is a concerning one for the brown and gold, who will be relying heavily on their recruit, Jonathan Patton, in front of goals, as well as Luke Breust. It will be interesting to see how the 2018 Brownlow Medalist, Tom Mitchell, fares in his return after missing 2019 with a broken leg.

For Brisbane, Lachie Neale will go head to head with Mitchell in the middle. The ball magnets are sure to find plenty of the footy. Hugh McCluggage and Mitch Robinson are other keys, while the goalsneak, Charlie Cameron, can trouble the Hawks defenders.

Team News

Sam Frost and Jon Patton are among the new faces for Hawthorn. Jack Gunston and Mitch Lewis will be out to prove their fitness. Tom Mitchell returns. Brisbane have a healthy list and the former Hawk, Grant Birchall, steps out for his new side.

Stats Brisbane have had the wood on Hawthorn in recent years, winning four straight. Those wins have come at an average margin of 34 points. Prior to that, the Hawks hadn’t lost to Brisbane since 2009.

The two sides have not played at the MCG since Round 12 in 2012. That game went the way of the Hawks by 65 points. Hawthorn won four of their nine games at the MCG in 2019, while Brisbane dropped their two.

Match Odds
