Haddad Maia has long stumbled at the majors, but this seems like the tournament where she breaks out and goes on a deep run.

The Brazilian is ranked No. 14 in the world after an outstanding last 12 months or so, winning two WTA titles last year and demonstrating solid clay court form in the lead-up to Roland Garros, making the quarter-finals in Stuttgart and Rome.

Haddad Maia crushed Tatjana Maria 6-1 6-0 in her opening round and saved a match point in a real battle with the in-form Ekaterina Alexandrova in the third round, eventually prevailing 7-5 in the third.

That win should give Haddad Maia immense confidence for the remainder of the tournament and she will start favourite against Sorribes Tormo today.

Sorribes Tormo is ranked outside the top 100 after only recently returning to action from a six-month injury layoff.

The Spaniard has mostly been playing on the ITF circuit since coming back, so this is going to be a major step up in class, while she also returned in the opening round of Madrid in April.

Sorribes Tormo also benefited from the withdrawal of Elena Rybakina to make it to the second week of Roland Garros.
