We’re off to ATP Umag for today’s best bet as Dominic Thiem looks to start finally building some winning momentum when he gets his campaign started against Facundo Bagnis.

It’s been a long, slow road back to the top for Thiem, who has been struck down by various injuries since winning the US Open a couple of years ago.

Currently ranked No. 94, Thiem has at least clawed his way back into the top 100 and the next step is to go deep at an ATP event – and Umag 250 could be the perfect chance.

Thiem has great memories of Umag – it was the scene of his second career title (he’s since collected 17). The Austrian is undefeated with a 4-0 record at the tournament and could serve as a great springboard event this week.

While the wins haven’t exactly been flowing, Thiem’s level has improved over the last month – he pushed Stefanos Tsitsipas all the way in a five-set thriller at Wimbledon and registered a solid straight sets win last week over Alexandre Muller last week in Gstaad.

Thiem’s got a decent draw to get going in Umag. Bagnis isn’t anywhere near his best right now, with the 33-year-old down to a ranking of No. 136.

Bagnis has barely been active at tour-level this season, owning a terrible 1-7 record – and that one win came against the World No. 164 back in March in Miami.

Thiem is clearly by far the superior player at his best and he’s getting closer to that level each week now – confident he can cover a small -2.5 games handicap in victory here.
