We’re off to ATP Hamburg for today’s best bet as Casper Ruud begins his pursuit of a first title over ATP 250 level when he opens his campaign against Sebastian Baez.

Despite a somewhat underwhelming 2023 season, Ruud remains No. 4 in the world. He’s once again impressed on clay, winning 20 of 27 matches on the surface, including reaching the French Open final.

Ruud loves the short post-Wimbledon clay season and he’s coming off a runner-up showing in Bastad last week, falling to Andre Rublev in the final.

Overall, Ruud has made at least the quarter-finals of his last four clay tournaments and finished runner-up in his last two.

With this in mind, we’re backing Ruud to comfortably account for a struggling Baez in his opening match and cover a -4.5 games handicap.

Baez has failed to back up his form from previous years this season and his ranking has taken a big hit, falling from No. 30 to a current mark of No. 68.

The Argentine is certainly down on confidence and there’s also been question marks over his fitness at stages throughout the season.

Baez comes into this clash having lost five of his last six matches, including an opening round loss to Federico Coria in the first round of Bastad last week.

Now Baez gets one of the toughest possible tests in his Hamburg opener. Ruud absolutely demolished Baez in their only previous meeting, registering a 6-3 6-0 victory in the quarter-finals on the clay of Estoril earlier this season.

While it might not be as dominant, Ruud should be set for another routine win over the Argentine today.
