Bet Of The Day August 30

Andrew Hendrie:
Bet Of The Day August 30

The US Open Round 1 match between Henri Laaksonen and John Millman features as’s best bet for Monday August 30.

Bet Of The Day August 30 – read on below for our reasoning behind today’s best bet.

We target our fourth #BOTD in a row as we turn our attention to the US Open where qualifier Henri Laaksonen is good value to provide a first round upset of John Millman.

Millman experienced the best moment of his career at the US Open a few years ago when he stunned Roger Federer to make his only Grand Slam quarter-final, but the Aussie has had a sub-par year in 2021 and comes into this tournament under an injury cloud.

Indeed, Millman was bundled out in the opening round of five straight hardcourt events earlier this season and only won consecutive main draw matches for the first time a few weeks ago in Washington.

Additionally, Millman has been dealing with a foot injury that contributed to a loss at the Toronto Masters to Gael Monfils and forced him to withdraw from recent tournaments in Cincinnati and Winston-Salem.

After going down to Monfils a fortnight ago, Millman told the Frenchman his body ‘had seen better days’ at the net. Not exactly ideal preparation for five-set Grand Slam tennis.

By contrast, Laaksonen has been playing well over the last couple of months and heads into this encounter having won 16 of his last 20 matches.

The Swiss won three matches in qualifying last week, so he’s already used to the conditions and should be prepared to hit the ground running here.

Laaksonen – who is a much better player on his day than his ranking of No. 130 suggests – has experience of making a run at a slam after qualifying after reaching the third round of the French Open earlier this year, toppling Roberto Bautista Agut along the way.

Millman is the more steady and consistent player, but Laaksonen is capable of some great tennis when he’s on, and coupled with the Aussie’s injury concerns, we like the value in backing the qualifier to continue his run on Monday.

Key Points

  • Millman is 5-9 on hardcourt this season
  • Millman has withdrawn injured from his last two tournaments
  • Millman hasn’t won a Grand Slam match in 2021
  • Laaksonen has won 16 of his last 20 matches
  • Laaksonen made the third round of Roland Garros after qualifying earlier this season
