The ATP Toronto Masters Round 1 match between Nick Kyrgios and Reilly Opelka features as Bettingpro.com.au’s best bet for Monday August 9.
Bet Of The Day August 9 – read on below for our reasoning behind today’s best bet.
We’re heading to the Toronto Masters for today’s best bet as Nick Kyrgios and Reilly Opelka square off in the opening round.
Big serving and short points will be the order of the day and we can get some decent value in backing Opelka to come out on top.
Kyrgios has barely played this season and is coming into this clash cold – he retired injured at Wimbledon and has lost his last two matches in straight sets in Atlanta and Washington to Cameron Norrie and Mackie McDonald respectively.
The Australian has been commenting on his career in recent tournaments and how he’s in a ‘weird’ juncture in his life. In short, Kyrgios seems far from settled and his lack of tennis could come back to haunt him in a match that is set to feature plenty of pressure moments due to the big serving from both players.
Opelka has been up and down for most of the season, but at least he’s played all the way through and has far more match-play under his belt.
The giant American is capable of beating anyone on his day and if he has a good serving day, Kyrgios is likely to get frustrated at his lack of opportunities.
Opelka is also far more than a big serve and his enormous forehand will also do some damage against Kyrgios.
We think this is a 50-50 match-up – there’s no way Kyrgios should be the favourite considering the circumstances. Opelka will get up for this opening round match and if he serves well, he’s a great chance of claiming the win.
- Kyrgios has lost three of his last four matches since retiring at Wimbledon
- Kyrgios hasn’t won a set in his last two matches
- Kyrgios has only played six matches since the Australian Open
- Opelka has won his opening round at his last two hardcourt events
